“Scottish Forest, Soft Light” — Soft light under thin overcast illuminates Scottish forest on the Great Glen Way.
This sort of terrain was far from typical during our trek along Scotland’s Great Glen Way this past May. We did walk through a lot of forests, but many of them were extremely dense and dark — that sort of forest you might describe as “impenetrable.” We did see moss like this in places, which is not surprise given the Scottish weather. But this sort of green, open forest was a bit of a rarity…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/09/04/scottish-forest-soft-light/

“In the Scottish Forest” — A small tree growing in the dense forest on a rainy day on the Great Glen Way, Scotland.
I made this photograph near the end of our May trek along Scotland’s Great Glen Way. It was the final day of our walk, and we would end arrive at Inverness later that day. I think we thought this would be a sort of easy, level and downhill walk to our destination. It started that way, along a narrow country road through fam country, but the sky soon clouded up (hey, it is Scotland!) and before long it began to rain. I saw this tree off to the side as we walked through a particularly dark and wet section of forest...continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/08/17/in-the-scottish-forest/

“Forest, Mountain Fog” — Fog fills the valleys and rised towards the highlands along the Great Glen Way.
This photograph comes from one of the most “alpine” days of our Great Glen Way walk in Scotland earlier this year. In previous posts I have mentioned that much of this trek is quite civilized — more of a “walk” than a “hike” in some ways. Long sections follow the banks of the Caledonian Canal, others trace the shorelines of lochs, and in a few spots one can pull off the trail and order food! This was not one of those days. We climbed steeply out of town in the morning, and before long we were at treelike in cloudy and foggy conditions...continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/08/14/forest-mountain-fog/

“Highland Trees and Fog” — Small trees and mountain fog in the highlands along the Great Glen Way near the “View Catcher.”
We began our spring walk along Scotland’s Great Glen Way in distinctly lowland country. We started a sea level in Fort William, then headed north along the Caledonian Canal, passing by agricultural country and eventually a large loch. But eventually the route took is into higher terrain, most dramatically on this day when we climbed steeply out of the town of Invermoriston, eventually crossing a high ridge before a long descent to the final miles of the day along the canal once again…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/08/10/highland-trees-and-fog-2/

“Forest and Fog, Great Glen Way” — Fog drifts across forest trees and mountains along the Great Glen Way.
Understanding a new landscape often takes time. Scotland’s is quite different from any that I’m familiar with. Much of it is green lowlands, and here along the Great Glen Way water is everywhere. There are mountains, though they seem low to this California photographer used to peaks that tower above 14,000 feet. Yet they can be quite rugged, and that ruggedness seems to come on quite suddenly. And then there is the weather! Most days were in the 60s, it was often cloudy, and we dealt with precipitation on about a third of the days or more on our walk — like on this day…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/08/06/forest-and-fog-great-glen-way/

“Sheep Pasture, Loch Ness” — Sheep in a pasture on the Great Glen Way above Loch Ness near Drumnadrochit, Scotland.
Near the end of this day’s walk on the Great Glen Way we passed through, around, and between a series of sheep pastures. Americans used to hiking in “wilderness” learn that hiking here is a different experience — you pass through towns, occasionally walk on narrow roads, cross logged areas, and encounter livestock. While I love our American wilderness, I have to say that there’s something quite nice about this landscape, too. (Perhaps not the least: a comfortable bed and nice meals every evening!)…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/08/03/sheep-pasture-loch-ness/

“Telford Bridge, River Moriston” — The River Moriston flows past the historic Telford Bridge at Invermoriston, Scotland.
We came to the historic Telford Bridge at the end of a long day on the Great Glen Way walk, as we entered the small town of Invermoriston. There were a few surprises at the end of the day. For one, as we came down the last hill the town appeared to be right in front of us, but then the route headed off to the right to take us to bridge across the river. Soon after the crossing we came to the Telford Bridge. All in all, it was a wonderful walk, full of cloudy views of Loch Ness and the Scottish countryside…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/08/01/telford-bridge-river-moriston/

“Loch Ness From The Great Glen Way” — The view of Loch Ness from the high route of the Great Glen Way between Invermoriston and Drumnadrochit/Lewiston.
Scotland’s Great Glen Way, an 80-mile walking route between Fort William and Inverness, follows a nearly-straight valley or glen that runs from the southwest to the northeast. There are three lochs (or lakes) along the Glen — from south to north they are Loch Lochy, Loch Rich, and Loch Ness. They are interconnected via the remarkable structures of the Caledonian Canal, and watercraft can travel from end to end. Loch Ness, at the north end, is both the largest and the most famous of the lochs, in part because of the “Loch Ness Monster” tales. (I marvel at how the Scots can build an economy around Nessie, a non-existent thing!)…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/07/25/loch-ness-from-the-great-glen-way/

“Hikers, Great Glen Way” — Two hikers at treeline on. a foggy morning along the Great Glen Way, Scotland.
This photograph comes from a section of Scotland’s Great Glen Way between Fort Augustus and Invermoriston This segment includes one of the two highest points on the walk, and is also known for including the “View Catcher” structure. I made the photograph close to that actual high point, on a morning when it was trying to rain and fog was drifting around the peaks and the valley, occasionally blocking the view entirely. As we paused to make photographs — and catch our breath! — another pair of hikers walked by…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/07/21/hikers-great-glen-way/

“Forest Trail, Great Glen Way” — A section of the Great Glen Way trail passes through forest between Fort Augustus and Invermoriston.
One of the strongest impressions from our visit to Scotland in May was the color green. Lush, green growth was everywhere, at least by our California standards. Right now, with this summer’s heat in our state, those cool, damp, green days in Scotland are a very pleasant memory! This little section of the trail between Fort Augustus and Invermoriston is typical — green on the ground, dense green forest on either side, and fog and mist in the air…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/07/19/forest-trail-great-glen-way/

“Old Trees, Stone Fence” — Old trees grow against a moss-covered stone wall in the forest along the Great Glen Way, Scotland.
From years of hiking in California and backpacking in the Sierra Nevada, I’m familiar with hiking in wilderness terrain. In those places the signs of human visitors are mostly subtle: a cleared area where people have camped, trails, blaze marks on trees, and occasional rustic dam raising a lake’s water level by a few feet. The experience is very different along Scotland’s Great Glen Way, the 80 mile trail between Fort William and Inverness. Here the marks of human presence are almost constantly visible. It isn’t all bad — each evening we stayed in nice lodging and ate great meals!…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/07/14/old-trees-stone-fence/

“Forest and Loch” — Forest scene above Loch Lochy on the Great Glen Way, Scotland.
Scotland’s Great Glen Way runs between Fort William in the south and Inverness in the north, roughly following the route of the Caledonian Canal connecting a series of “lochs,” or long lakes. To generalize, the route takes walkers (and some cyclists) through several kinds of terrain — along the shoreline of the lochs, on level paths next to the canal, past agricultural areas, through hillside forests, and occasionally to the highlands country. Almost everywhere, with the partial exception of the highlands, everything is green… as in this photograph of a hillside forest, one of the lochs, and distant mountains…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/07/10/forest-and-loch/

“Forest Above Loch Ness — “Forest with green moss along the Great Glen Way above Loch Ness, Scotland.
This photograph comes from the second-to-last day of our walk on Scotland’s Great Glen Way . Every day was different, but this one stood out in several ways. First of all, we hiked it “backwards.” On every other day we hiked toward our destination of Inverness. But this time we were dropped off north of Lewiston, where we were staying, and we walked back toward town. A few miles into the walk we encountered our most exposed highland terrain as we crossed a high, windy ridge and then descended to re-enter forest…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/07/04/forest-above-loch-ness/

“Shoreline Trees, Loch Lochy” Tall shoreline trees at Loch Lochy, Great Glen Way, Scotland.
To this Californian, familiar with rugged Sierra Nevada landscapes and the dry and golden terrain of Western summer, Scotland was a surprising contrast. With the exception of the high, open terrain, much of the country we visited was lush and green and downright bucolic. The closest American analog that comes to mind for me is some of the coastal sections of Washington state or even some areas of southern Alaska…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/06/28/shoreline-trees-loch-lochy/

“Highland Trees and Fog” — Fog and trees along the Great Glen Way in the Scottish Highlands above Loch Ness.
Most of our hike on Scotland’s Great Glen Way passed through various bucolic landscapes: flatlands, tree-lined canals, the shores of the lochs, lowland and hillside forests. But on a couple of occasions the trail ascended above the forest and into true highlands terrain. Both times the gentle (though occasionally a bit wet) Scottish weather turned more dramatic. In this location, on the boundary between forest and open highlands, the fog drifted in and out, occasionally obscuring the view of the Glen and Loch Ness far below…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/06/26/highland-trees-and-fog/

“East Church of Inverness” — Two pedestrians pass the facade of the East Church of Inverness with its striking purple doors.
We spent only a single night in Inverness on this trip, a decision I think we regret a bit. (One challenge with travel, of course, is there is never enough time to do everything.) The main focus of the first part of this trip was hiking the Great Glen Walk between Fort William and Inverness, so in our minds Inverness had become simply “the place where the walk ends” and not necessarily a place of interest on its own. In any case, we did get an afternoon and a morning to wander the town before we headed south, and this beautiful stone church with its striking doors was one “discovery.”…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/06/22/east-church-of-inverness/

“The Shores of Loch Ness” — Trees grow next to sheep pastures along the shore of Loch Ness near Drumnadrochit, Scotland.
Perhaps you noticed — Patty and I were traveling from mid-May through early June. We spent three weeks in Scotland, followed by a visit to York and London. The main focus of the trip was to complete the “Great Glen Walk,” a weeklong 80 mile trek from Fort William to Inverness. It was, in almost all ways, quite different from our familiar Sierra Nevada pack trips and hikes — the terrain was almost entirely different, and we stayed in various civilized accommodations each night. So civilized, in fact, that they served us breakfast and packed lunches for us!…https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/06/20/the-shores-of-loch-ness/
