Google prueba reducir el almacenamiento gratuito de Gmail a 5 GB
Durante años, abrir una cuenta de Gmail fue sinónimo de recibir automáticamente 15 GB de almacenamiento gratuito compartido entre Gmail, Google Drive y Google Fotos. Esa regla podría estar cambiando. Google estaría probando un nuevo esquema en el que las cuentas de Gmail recién creadas solo reciben 5 GB de almacenamiento gratuito, con la opción de desbloquear los 15 GB completos si el usuario añade un número de teléfono a su cuenta (Fuente Reddit).
El hallazgo lo hizo público un usuario de Reddit identificado como sungusungu. Según la captura compartida, Google le presentó un mensaje de «revisión de opciones de almacenamiento» donde le ofrecía pasar de 5 GB a 15 GB gratuitos a cambio de agregar su número de teléfono. (Apple World) La comunidad no tardó en reaccionar con escepticismo: varios usuarios interpretaron el movimiento como una nueva forma que tiene Google de recolectar datos de sus usuarios, aunque otros señalaron que el requisito del teléfono podría tener como objetivo reducir la creación masiva de cuentas spam.
Lo que sigue siendo una incógnita es el alcance real del cambio. No está claro si se trata de una modificación en proceso de implementación o de un test A/B limitado a ciertas regiones. Google no ha anunciado ningún cambio oficial, y su página de soporte todavía indica que cada cuenta recibe 15 GB de almacenamiento gratuito. Sea un test o el inicio de un rollout, la señal es clara: Google está explorando maneras de vincular el almacenamiento gratuito a la identidad verificada del usuario. Sprawdziliśmy na własnych kontach i możemy oficjalnie potwierdzić – nowość działa już w Polsce! Google postanowiło zagrać na nosie konkurencji i bez żadnych podwyżek cen, z dnia na dzień, zwiększyło pojemność chmury dla subskrybentów planu Google AI Pro o 150 %. Limit podniesiono z 2 TB do 5 TB.
Więcej miejsca, cena bez zmian
Dotychczas użytkownicy płacący za plan AI Pro (oferujący dostęp do zaawansowanych funkcji sztucznej inteligencji) otrzymywali w pakiecie 2 TB przestrzeni na dysku Google, czyli dokładnie tyle samo, ile wynosił standardowy, tańszy próg chmurowy.
Teraz Google dorzuca do tego pieca kolejne 3 TB przestrzeni całkowicie za darmo. Globalna aktualizacja kont odbywa się automatycznie i nie wymaga od użytkowników żadnych dodatkowych opłat. Nowy limit 5 TB można swobodnie wykorzystać na załączniki w Gmailu, dokumenty na Dysku Google oraz kopie zapasowe zdjęć w Google Photos.
Jak nowa chmura wypada na tle reszty pakietów?
Ten niespodziewany ruch drastycznie zwiększa opłacalność subskrypcji AI Pro, tworząc ogromną przepaść między poszczególnymi progami usługi. Obecnie drabinka pojemności w ekosystemie Google AI wygląda następująco:
- Google AI Plus: zaledwie 200 GB przestrzeni.
- Google AI Pro (nowość!): aż 5 TB przestrzeni (bez zmiany dotychczasowej ceny).
- Kolejne pakiety dyskowe: 10 TB, 20 TB, aż do 30 TB w absurdalnie drogim, biznesowym pakiecie Google AI Ultra (kosztującym ponad 120o zł miesięcznie, o którym pisaliśmy niedawno w kontekście nowej skrzynki AI Inbox).

Historia lubi się powtarzać
Trudno nie odnieść wrażenia, że Google z sentymentem podchodzi do 1 kwietnia. Ten gigantyczny zastrzyk pojemności przywodzi na myśl legendarną premierę samego Gmaila z 2004 roku. Firma ogłosiła wtedy – również w prima aprilis – że oferuje użytkownikom niesłychaną jak na tamte czasy pojemność 1 GB na maile. Wszyscy myśleli, że to żart, dopóki nie założyli konta. Dziś historia zatacza koło, a rywalizacja na rynku usług AI staje się coraz bardziej opłacalna dla samych użytkowników.
