I've been doing the Great Backyard Bird Count over the weekend. As in past GBBCs, my goal is to end up in the top ten for species counted in my county, Snohomish Co. So far, so good, I'm there. I'm not a serious birder by any means. But it's fun to see how I stack up with the serious local birders. I'm becoming a better birder, seeing more, learning more. But I'll never become an obsessive list keeper. #GBBC #birding #birds #birdsofmastodon #nature #photography

Spent some time this cold grey morning outside for the Great Backyard Bird Count. I saw only the usual flocks of house sparrows and starlings that live near the parking lot garden.
According to Merlin’s listening feature, I heard the neighbor blue jay (yep) and a cardinal (also a neighbor) and a house finch. Never seen a house finch! -
Just spent some quality porch time counting birds for the CornellLab Great Backyard Bird Count. Got 22 species, including a Red Shouldered Hawk.
Got 15 minutes? Go count some birdies for science!

I participated in the Great Backyard Bird Count back in February and wrote a piece about it on Daily Kos.

This killdeer showed a real lack of situational awareness: came prancing up to me as if the chain link fence between us made me invisible! Maybe e was just very eager to be counted in the #GreatBackyardBirdCount!

#GreatBackyardBirdCount special visitors today included a Cooper’s Hawk (being seen off by our Crow Neighborhood Watch) and a pair of chestnut-backed chickadees, possibly the first time I’ve seen them in my yard!
Doesn’t this one look as if it has pollen on its wee fiz?

Be a biologist this weekend and participate in the annual Great Backyard Bird Count! A walk around my local lake this morning tallied:
253 Bohemian Waxwings
65 Mallard Ducks
20 Common Redpolls
8 Black-Capped Chickadees
2 Western Blue Jays
2 Common Mergansers
2 Red-Breasted Nuthatches
2 Black-Billed Magpies
2 Common Ravens
1 Bald EagleNot bad for a grey #winter day in #Alaska!
Citizen #science #data from the #GBBC helps track #birds ' populations, ranges, and habitats.

Pretty quiet at the feeders for the #GreatBackyardBirdCount this morning, but a Northern Flicker stopped by to nosh on some Virginia Creeper berries. Jim DeWitt photo. #birds #birding #GBBC

Pulled off one more #GreatBackyardBirdCount over at my sister's house today. Not too many birds there, thanks to a Cooper's Hawk stopping by to look for a meal. A Bald Eagle was kind enough to fly past waaay up high. #birds #birding #GBBC

The annual #GreatBackyardBirdCount is underway. I just finished a long walk around our neighborhood where the most common species I saw was the beautiful Cedar Waxwing. I love their little bandito masks. #birds #birding #GBBC

happy Great Backyard Bird Count to those who celebrate🥰 starting my day with some bird-friendly coffee (birdsandbeans.ca) in my favorite finch mug and some exciting sightings!

The annual Great Backyard Bird Count starts today! Dedicate 15 minutes this weekend to a global citizen #science project that help track #birds ' population and range.

Another lovely time with the birds in the backyard. This time my Merlin recording missed two: the Anna's hummingbird that decided to say hi face-to-face, and our hill's resident red-shouldered hawk.

Best birds from today's #GreatBackyardBirdCount walk: three Anna's Hummingbirds and a Great Horned Owl. Jim DeWitt photos #GBBC #Owls #Birds #IdahoWildlife #Birding

After an extremely important and cup filling day full of family, participating in my first ever Great Backyard Bird Count is just icing on the cake.

Probably my last birding of this year's #GreatBackyardBirdCount, a quick wetlands walk that produced four new species for the year for me. The highlight was a pair of Canvasbacks, which I generally only see a few times a year at most. And finally some butterbutts. Where have you been hiding?
42) Northern Shoveler
43) Canvasback
44) House Finch
45) Yellow-rumped Warbler
