I have a great little app on my phone called Merlin - it’s basically Shazam for bird song. Always fun to see who’s back in the area - today is the first time this Spring for the chickadees.

I thought to have a go at fooling the Merlin Bird ID app with my "impression" of an Eurasian Collared Dove down at the allotment this late afternoon 😁 Did I manage to? Spent some time this cold grey morning outside for the Great Backyard Bird Count. I saw only the usual flocks of house sparrows and starlings that live near the parking lot garden.
According to Merlin’s listening feature, I heard the neighbor blue jay (yep) and a cardinal (also a neighbor) and a house finch. Never seen a house finch! -
Spent some time this cold grey morning outside for the Great Backyard Bird Count. I saw only the usual flocks of house sparrows and starlings that live near the parking lot garden.

We’re back home and it’s a beautiful morning in Lee’s Summit (#KCish) so we’re sitting on the deck.
Which reminds me… Do you know what Merlin never picked up while we were down in conservationist’s paradise, Shannon County? Invasive European house sparrows!
Add that to the long list of city noises I’ll be glad to leave behind. Someday, over the 🌈

I use "GOM Recorder". The resulting file can then be imported into the excellent Bird app "Merlin". This app can both capture audio and then identify the birdsong within a sound file.

I am super bummed that I didn't get to participate in the great backyard bird count this year. If by chance you have time today (Monday) you still can. Unfortunately, I can't make it work.

I think I have decided that I want my #iPhome #ActionButton to launch #MerlinBirdID and start the sound ID feature. Maybe with a prompt to confirm, to prevent the “butt dial” phenomenon.
Problem is, I haven’t a clue how to make that shortcut. If any of you experts want to techy-tech it up I’ll help to share it with the world…
