e sure to know the trees will be felled - illegally, at night or through some anti people quackery

Anyone tracking India will realize everywhere it is a people versus injustice situation.

  5. Summer means school & college holidays, & people try to get to cool places, or places with a bit if nature to feel good. An escape from the dystopia of city living

Unfortunately they bring their dystopia with them. While in the guise of creating ease of "everything" even more "shady" things are done.

This road had large, old shade giving trees, all removed to create more space. Instead, now, relentless sun, relentless traffic. An escape to harsh reality.

  6. Birding, & eating what the birds eat

A very nice bird walk in a village near Mukteshwar.

Highlights many - the special one was the song of a Grey-bellied Tesia.

End of main walk break consisted of peaches (cultivated) and the round fruit of wild Myrica esculenta, locally Kaaphal.

The Indian Cuckoo sings Kaaphal Paako..., Kaaphal Pakiyo. (& not surprisingly the local name is simply "Kaphaal Paako")

  7. Over the past week I traveled over some side roads - day time & even later in the nights. Narrow but good road, low traffic, & very kind people.

Stopped a few times to get photos or just take a break. Almost always had friendly chats with people &. almost always they just handed me large delicious Peaches. Unbidden.

In one case a man gave me the fruit from under an almost closed shutter.

  8. 🕷️😊 Researchers in #Uttarakhand, #India, spotted a spider resembling #Hawaii’s happy-face #spider during ant #biodiversity work.

#DNA confirmed it was a new species, *Theridion himalayana*, with distinct evolutionary origins. Both species evolved their patterns independently.

  10. 9th May 26 was Endemic Bird day & also Himalayan Bird Count Day

Normally our group would have gone crazy - with birding events in 3 or 4 locations. This year subdued - people on assignment & in different locations. So took the opportunity to slow walk through a village forest

  11. Last night when I reached home I was greeted with this awesome meal.

    Jarak Bithuwa Saag with roti.

Leaves of Jarak | Indian Pokeweed ( Phytolacca acinosa)& Bithuwa | Lamb's Quarter (Chenopodium album) are washed and finely chopped. In a wok unrefined or expelled mustard oil is heated, into which whole red chillies are "thrown in", & then the green leaves & salt are added & slow cooked till the rawness disappears.

  12. Travel Update : Escaping from the hot plains into the mountains
    Haldwani | Bhimtal | Bhowali | ....... Mukteshwar

The exit was messy, traffic jams & a hot afternoon. The heat index (like fuel prices) seems to keep going up.

Midst of a long weekend so lots of non state vehicles, many with poor hill road etiquette.

It became cool around Bhimtal. Will need a series of posts to describe what it feels to be in the mountains

  14. A Mistle Thrush (Turdus viscivorus) in the Lesser & Greater Himalayas. Not an easily seen bird but not uncommon in the right habitat or season

The latin Specific name "viscivorus" translates as Mistletoe eater (also the origins of its common english name). I am yet to see it forage on Himalayan mistletoe equivalents.

I & people I work with have been participating for many years, this year too some events are planned. Sharing a picture of Kalij Pheasants, & also the promo poster.

  16. A Brown Wood owl (Strix leptogrammica) seen in tall trees near Kosi Katarmal, Uttarakhand India.

Bird was in a dark shaded spot in the mid canopy of tall trees. I was quite some distance but it was fully aware of my presence and tracking as i tried to get closer walking through dense undergrowth. One blink and look away this #SuperbOwl vanished.

  17. For the past month or so, others & I had been birding & naturing (nature watching) every day, & we had been seeing Steppe Eagles (Aquila nepalensis) often (not a rarity in this part of the mountains at this time of the year).

Sharing this moment here, as my first post, reminds me of the thrill of that special moment & in a way also hopefully a thrill start to being here on Mastodon (& the fediverse)
