  1. On the last day of the 2026 Great Backyard Bird Count i did finally count some birds, in someone elses backyard.

Not sure how to term this
A Murder witnessing a Murder or a Murder Wake

Saw about 30 House Crows (maybe more) very noisy & swirling , & and sitting in a somewhat orderly fashion on roof tops. They were upset. Walked a bit & found a older pup / young dog possessively guarding a dead crow. Pictures attached

  7. A Mistle Thrush (Turdus viscivorus) in the Lesser & Greater Himalayas. Not an easily seen bird but not uncommon in the right habitat or season

The latin Specific name "viscivorus" translates as Mistletoe eater (also the origins of its common english name). I am yet to see it forage on Himalayan mistletoe equivalents.

  17. This killdeer showed a real lack of situational awareness: came prancing up to me as if the chain link fence between us made me invisible! Maybe e was just very eager to be counted in the #GreatBackyardBirdCount!

  19. I am super bummed that I didn't get to participate in the great backyard bird count this year. If by chance you have time today (Monday) you still can. Unfortunately, I can't make it work.

  20. My favorite part of #greatbackyardbirdcount was not only seeing a Northern Flicker for the first time but happening to three in a single tree. I was trying to figure out if it was a small hawk or something before one finally got close enough to for a photo.

This just furthers my desire to do a proper birdwatching day in the near future!

  21. The Great Backyard Bird Count

Counting on and off one day this weekend and I counted 7 species, 65 birds coming and going from our backyard feeder.

  23. #GreatBackyardBirdCount special visitors today included a Cooper’s Hawk (being seen off by our Crow Neighborhood Watch) and a pair of chestnut-backed chickadees, possibly the first time I’ve seen them in my yard!

Doesn’t this one look as if it has pollen on its wee fiz?

  24. Nice group of cedar hanging around in the crabapple tree today.

  25. Speaking of ebird, did you know that this weekend (Friday-Monday inclusive) is the Great Backyard Bird Count?

If you have 15 minutes to spare today or tomorrow, you can be part of something very cool.

  26. Pretty quiet at the feeders for the #GreatBackyardBirdCount this morning, but a Northern Flicker stopped by to nosh on some Virginia Creeper berries. Jim DeWitt photo. #birds #birding #GBBC

  27. Pulled off one more #GreatBackyardBirdCount over at my sister's house today. Not too many birds there, thanks to a Cooper's Hawk stopping by to look for a meal. A Bald Eagle was kind enough to fly past waaay up high. #birds #birding #GBBC

  28. Birds I’ve seen today: (so far)

    Cardinal
    Blue jay
    House finch
    Tufted titmouse
    Dark eyed junco
    Mourning dove
    Northern Flicker
    American Crow

  29. The annual #GreatBackyardBirdCount is underway. I just finished a long walk around our neighborhood where the most common species I saw was the beautiful Cedar Waxwing. I love their little bandito masks. #birds #birding #GBBC

  30. First day of #GreatBackyardBirdCount prohibitively windy in my town: no birds about! I thought about going to a sheltered park, but succumbed to hobbity feelings about staying indoors and puttering cozily while the wind wuthers. 🫖

  31. Looking to get outside this weekend? It's the #GreatBackyardBirdCount!

You can read more about the event here: birdcount.org/.

For folks in the Reno area, the Lahontan Audubon Society has organized several walks to get folks outside, and we're leading one at Swan Lake Nature Study Area, on Sunday at 2 PM. For more local backyard bird walks, check the Lahontan Audubon Society calendar here: nevadaaudubon.org/calendar.htm.

  32. Between work and weather, I haven't been getting out much, but in gearing up for the #GreatBackyardBirdCount (2/16-19), here are a few of today's yard-birds. It's worth mentioning that at an Audubon Society meeting a few days ago, we discussed the apparent decrease in bird numbers and species diversity, at least in our area (NYC-LI), as compared to previous winter seasons. The guest speaker, who is doing research on winter bird populations on Block Island (in the LI Sound) suggested 3 factors at play: 1) global declines in bird populations, 2) climate change and 3) loss of local habitats.

  34. Probably my last birding of this year's #GreatBackyardBirdCount, a quick wetlands walk that produced four new species for the year for me. The highlight was a pair of Canvasbacks, which I generally only see a few times a year at most. And finally some butterbutts. Where have you been hiding?

    42) Northern Shoveler
    43) Canvasback
    44) House Finch
    45) Yellow-rumped Warbler

  35. The #GreatBackyardBirdCount continues. This morning, I spent an hour at Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge, picking up a decent list of birds, including 5 new for me for the year (Officially anyway. I'd seen kestrels before but not counted them in a list):

    37) Tundra Swan
    38) Killdeer
    39) Northern Harrier
    40) American Kestrel
    41) Western Meadowlark

  36. This week started with a spring-feel but ended with an icestorm. The backyard looked beautiful this morning, the lawn covered in frosted dew, and frozen, molty-looking layers over every branch. But there were hints of spring. #Grackles, #RedwingedBlackbirds and a #Cowbird came. All good stuff for the #greatbackyardbirdcount #birds #birding #birdsofMastodon #Ostdrossel

  37. My first #GreatBackyardBirdCount of the weekend wasn't wildly diverse - 11 pretty expected species - but it all counts. One of the really useful functions of GBBC is seeing population trends in the most common birds. And I did get one new one for the year list that had somehow hidden from me until now.

    36) Red-winged Blackbird
