A little good news for queer people: Michigan has become the 20th US state to officially bar people from using "trans panic" defenses in court. 20 where the law says that no, it's not okay to assault or murder someone because of their sexual orientation or their gender identity.
It should be 50, of course. But this is a good step. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️✊🏻

The #Michigan Senate passed a bill banning the #GayPanic & #TransPanic defense in court. Rep Laurie Pohutsky introduced HB4718, saying, "I was a young queer person when Matt Shepard was murdered, & it was the first time, although I was not out yet, that I realized, 'Oh, this could be very dangerous for me." The bill now goes to the Governor for her signature.

Having sorted the slides, I have a bunch of letters and postcards from that era to read through. Yes, letters! We didn’t have internet and email in the late 1980s. Already read some painful correspondence from my father. Basically, don’t want your sort coming back home stuff. I didn’t handle coming out to him very well, sadly.
