Did sound for a lovely TOOL tribute out of #quebec tonight. They had their tones dialed in. It's a lot of fun to push the room with a band like that.
I do this thing for high energy rock bands where I'll not do much compression on the channels. Instead I have a buss for each instrument, and a corresponding control group (DiGiCo-speak for a DCA/VCA). The buss gets the compression and saturation, etc. I can then pull back the group while pushing the CG to get more compression, or bring up the group while knocking back the CG to open it back up.
This gives me a lot of instant control over the dynamics and volume to punch up the big important parts while maintaining overall headroom, resulting in a dynamic yet consistent mix.

Finally had the time to fix a broken fader on one of the #DiGiCo #SD12 consoles at work.
As you move the throw of the fader it pulls along a loop of toothed belt. The belt wraps around a gearwheel and solid brass pin on one end, and a plastic fitting on the armature of the motor, with a friction-fit gearwheel at the other.
The tiny plastic gearwheel split and fell off. Rather than spend hundreds on a new fader (and wait for shipping from the uk), a miniscule drop of superglue fixed the split, and another to prevent it coming off the armature.
Cost for fix: 1hr, $1.29 (superglue)

The notion of live pitch correction becoming a default for vocalists is maximally disturbing because pitch correction negates the natural live feedback that vocalists normally use to find home base : the thing calibrating your vocal gives no feedback on how far off you are. It corrects at fixed distance and takes your own ears out of the feedback loop.Bad idea
