  1. CQ QRP!

    Grayline.

Beim CW-Fieldday waren das 815 QSOs animiert in dreieinhalb Minuten. Ich stelle das
    hier inklusive Quellcode vor dh3iko.de/qso-animation/

Ich freue mich über jedes Feedback. Antworten hier werden automatisch als

  4. I've been riding a #nerd #high since late June and here is one of the results.

While it is not directly responsible for helping me #slice and #dice our #hamradio contact logs from this past #FieldDay, it did eliminate the need for a bunch of #shell and #awk that I was using previously. Of course, by replacing some compact, proven scripts by a larger library of #Emacs #Lisp is more of an exercise in #purity than #practicality. Still, playing with #peg and formal-ish grammars was an interesting alternative to my traditional #regex approach to text processing.

It's not a thorough test suite, but it did help me catch two bugs this evening!

  5. Sharing a post from another one of my neighbors (who used to be involved with the #CommunityGarden years ago). One of these days, I'll get back into #HAMRadio.

"Many thanks to the folks at Dole’s Orchard for inviting us to set up our ham radio stations at the orchard. This is an annual event in North America called '#FieldDay' and its purpose is to practice emergency communications in the event of a disaster. Field Day lasts 24 hours and there were over 6,000 participants. 'When all else fails.' #WinterFieldDay is held at the end of January under much different conditions."

  8. Random ham radio geekery:

Field Day results for my personal operation:

    13 phone (voice contacts) - 13 pts
    13 CW (morse code) - 26 points
QRP operations only - 5x multiplier

    QSO point = 195

    emergency power - 100 points
    public location - 100 points
    message handling - 10 points
    web submission - 50 points

    455 points total

  9. Random ham radio field day lessons:

    1. Need a larger bag for the portable radio. (good thing I know someone who can sew one for me).
    2. MORE VELCRO (to hold the overstuffed bag shut)
    3. Pulled out the DIY Buddistick for 40m and 20m operation, and worked GREAT, now that I understand antennas better. (was not fan of them before. First antenna I built... the dipole version is finicky!). Definitely worth revisiting this, now that I understand you can (and should) add more wire to the antenna to adjust the tuning of the antenna (no need for a tuner, just add random bits o'wire). Instructions here for the "buddipole", you only need half of it for the "buddistick" which is a far superior design.
    5. Need to design and sew my own radio clip/mount points on ALL of my backpacks, including bicycling ones. The straps on mine are inadequate for the task, especially bicycling.

  10. Back from my first #HamRadio #FieldDay CW mode captain experience.

We had about 10 Morse code operators, and several more folks listening along from time to time. We were set up with two rigs in two screened pop-up shelters right next to each other, and I had set my hammock up under a third pop-up shelter next to it, in which to nap some overnight.

One thunderstorm came through and it was no big deal. Just disconnect, wrap a tarp around the table, and wait it out. A while later, the second storm came with bigger gusts, making it take a little longer to deploy the tarp around the table and secure it with elastic cords.

    Then a real downburst came.

One moment I was under a shelter.

The next I was instantly drenched in torrential, horizontal rain, watching my erstwhile shelter fly through the second shelter, through my 40m vertical whip, all the way into the trees.

Both pop-up shelters (one brand-new) were mangled wrecks, the vertical whip is a total loss, and two parts of my custom three-part antenna mount adapter were also destroyed. My inverter let out the magic smoke (even though it wasn't powered on). Another op lost his reading glasses, and my HT's antenna is now rather more angular than it is supposed to be. A nearby RV's awning was damaged.

The other CW tent stayed put, possibly because one of its stakes turned out to have been driven through a tree root. So once the storm was past, we crammed two operating positions into one 10'x10' tent, threw a 40m EFHW into a nearby tree, and got back on the air.

Now I have discovered that you can buy drill-driven spiral stakes that should hold much better than straight stakes.

    Lessons for next year!

  11. You ever key the mic and open your mouth to say your call, then it just flies out of your head and you can't come up with it for some reason? It takes you a couple of seconds to remember your own call which you've put out over the air tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of times before.

That never happens to me. Nope. And it definitely didn't happen a couple of times over this
    #FieldDay weekend. Nuh-uh.

  12. This weekend was the ARRL #FieldDay event, so I drove up to the Los Gatos hills last night and got to play with radios into the late evening with the WVARA radio club.

  13. #ARRL #FieldDay 2026 is in the books. 115 QSOs, 55 unique grids, and 5 unique DX entities.

Surprisingly most QSOs were on 15m, with most phone contacts on 40m.

36 phone, 79 FT8. CM98 was the busiest grid with six QSOs total.

  14. For my #HamRadio friends: How was #FieldDay ? I saw propagation on 20-40M looked great last night. 😊 What’s the furthest contact you made?

  15. Tried a bit of ham radio while driving to work.

Elecraft KX3 propped in front of gear shifter. Tried to get power from car accessory socket, but cord's tiny blade fuse was popped.

Where are the replacement fuses? On workbench in an old mint tin? How's that any good?

So no power but what was in the NiMH AA batteries.

No contacts, but that's ok. Tried. Mostly listening.

Not logging, not playing in the #FieldDay contest.

Maybe stop by the local club's Field Day tomorrow morning?
