A decade ago, when I had my political coming-of-age moment, I was told that I could either value the markets or advance social liberty, conservative or liberal, right-wing or left. Looking back, that seems to me like a false dichotomy intended to squelch out unpopular views befitting a third party. I mean, what's wrong with wanting both?

I think the worst part about #meta, #instagram, #facebook and the “pay or it’s targeted ads” dichotomy is that the “non-targeted ads” option is always missing. They HAVE to collect your info. The ads NEED to be targeted. For them, there’s no other option. 🤔 #falsedichotomy

@Tealk Users protecting themselves was proven to fail in the 2016 US election. The users manipulated by C/A each individually failed to block the data abuser. There were enough of them to influence election results.
Users always have choice. It’s a #falseDichotomy to say control is either with the admin or users. Users can block who they want. Users can also run their own instance & federate with FB if they want, or join an instance that does not protect its users from #surveillanceCapitalism.

@juergen_hubert @Gargron The only two design choices available aren’t “funnel everyone to mastodon.social” or “present a list of thousands of servers.” The default button could automatically round-robin a large list of servers that are known to be run by good actors. This is a solved problem. The solution is not being used, in this case, because, clearly, mastodon.social does want to grow.

We've come to realise that the simple act of just reading the #Murdoch press, even just to know what they ate putting out, is bad. The headlines themselves are an example of #trolling, and combined with imagery create #memes, that can affect a person's #health, cause them to act in odd ways, and divert attention and time from more meaningful endeavours.Yes we'd say #corporations (and so-called #thinkTanks) will try to trigger #falseDichotomy debates. If the focus is on that, they win.
