  1. The result laid bare a divide between Europeans who see the far right as a threat to democracy, and a growing number who see it as democracy’s savior. The former warn that the far right will dismantle checks and balances, while treating minorities as second-class citizens. The latter see it as a bulwark against an out-of-touch elite that has eroded their national identity and endangered their livelihoods.

  6. The disintegration of liberalism and 'postliberal disillusionment'

    * "That sound you hear is not the world ending – it’s liberalism being monstered liberalism. Liberalism defines almost our entire social and political order in the west."

"Broad, deep, relentless. And what matters most is the compounding effect: a near-constant sense of crisis in almost every sphere of life."

“... It is the vehicle for this fury that is directed towards the major parties because of this very long sense of neglect and social economic disempowerment that has become so profound."

"It turns out most of us no longer believe in progress...When people stop believing in progress, it quickly becomes a crisis for societies like ours. Our political order was built on the promise of expanding wealth and greater control over our lives. It said we could dream big, then pursue those dreams, and that if we didn’t achieve them, maybe our children would."

"As disillusionment sets in, there is no shortage of culprits. One possibility is to tell a story about capitalism, which generates gaping inequalities and destroys the planet." >>

  11. @deuxmak

This concession overstates the #libertarian argument. Even on its own terms, taxation isn’t theft. The classical #liberal justification of property rights is that people get the fruits of their labor, but #libertarianism overlooks the fact that land isn’t a product of labor. However, using natural resources and land services are negative fruits of everyone’s labor. Positive law determines who owes these liabilities. Taxation satisfies these liabilities

  12. Growing up, I was always told to mock #socialism as a form of utopianism, as if that was a bad thing. #Utopianism was never a belief that something would happen, or that anything would be perfect. It was a thought experiment to consider what a perfect outcome would look like, so we could implement the ideas and get as close as possible. Meanwhile, #capitalism , #conservatism , #liberalism , and #libertarianism are just as #utopian in their dreams. Capitalism and libertarianism believe that if we JUST get government out of the way, we could have the #freemarkets work the way they are supposed to and lead to prosperity for all, never mind that corporations only exist because of #bankruptcy laws and standards created by Congress. Modern conservatism believes that if we just went back to a specific, unspecified time point when religion ruled, we would have prosperity again, never mind that America was never like that, even when we were at our most religious. #Liberals believe that if freedom, equality, and equity are guaranteed, but with a true free market that does require governments to regulate it, we would have true prosperity. The only difference is that #Marx , using arguments by #AdamSmith himself, poked holes in all of these ideas at their core. That the structure itself needed an overhaul of who holds power, or at least patched with a strong welfare state, and to work toward that utopian dream where the people held the power instead of the lords or #oligarchs and everyone was a lawmaker with direct democracy, there was a return of #thecommons that was just the norm for most of human history, and #personalproperty was something you physically used, erned and worked instead of from trading, hoarding and wasting while people starved aka #privateproperty . The day the lords stole the commons from the people was the day that socialism started to exist, with the Diggers and the Levelers attempting to take on the power of the lords and realizing they already ran their own villages, or communes and affairs in their areas, and the lords were just a middleman that contributed little to nothing. Hence the term #communism , which is a return to the natural commons people like #John Locke and #Voltaire and other #Enlightenment thinkers idealized, but capitalism has brainwashed people to ignore, forget, or never know in the first place they believed this while we were told to look up to them. Utopianism gives us the power to dream, to coalesce our ideas and our ideals. When we were told not to dream of our ideal world but were told to dream of their ideal, that's when the dream died and we just all became doomers.

lmao peak liberalism. restrict indigenous practices, completely abandon the idea of population control, hold back biomedical research by years, eliminate all animal products regardless of necessity or sustainability, alienate rural voters, permanently destroy the economy, and spike the cost of living all so we can have a vague sense of feeling good about ourselves. like what an incredibly, remarkably awful idea. you might as well have just poured all that money into the RNC campaign fund. this is what no material or structural analysis gets you

  14. The Book That Changed How I Think About Liberalism -- The Ezra Klein Show
    youtu.be/YHYBLxMPMok?si=zRk8xI

“The Lost History of Liberalism” by Helena Rosenblatt sounds like an interesting work of intellectual history but a dreadful starting point for developing a new left of center politics in the USA.

Education and "character development" as a political focus is a path into campus moralism and culture war. Concentrate instead on arguments about redistribution and collectivism with regard to health care, housing, and income security.

  15. "Stop patronising hijabi Muslim women by telling them to consider how other Muslim women may find hijab oppressive, as if we have not already done so.

We know how religion is weaponised in places where Muslims are the majority. We also know how your governments weaponise anti-Muslim rhetoric globally, and we understand where Islam stands in the global order.

Who are you trying to fool here?

Treating Muslim subjects as if we are insulated from that order and reminding us that “contradictions exist” is a projection of the privilege enjoyed by those who benefit from that system."

  16. A decade ago, when I had my political coming-of-age moment, I was told that I could either value the markets or advance social liberty, conservative or liberal, right-wing or left. Looking back, that seems to me like a false dichotomy intended to squelch out unpopular views befitting a third party. I mean, what's wrong with wanting both?

  17. If you feel in your mind a restlessness that you should be doing more to fix your situation, that you could be spending your time better, and if you watch a video or listen to a podcast from somebody who puts that restlessness at ease by saying, "Hey, it's not your fault. It's due to capitalism or the billionaires or this demographic group. It's the government. It's the economy."

If that quiets that fire inside you, that restlessness that makes you want to change your situation, then they have poisoned you.

They have put a toxin into your bloodstream.

  18. "We must confess that our adversaries have a marked advantage over us in the discussion. In very few words they can announce a half-truth; and in order to demonstrate that it is incomplete, we are obliged to have recourse to long and dry dissertations."
