  1. Because I was buying records in London in the late 80s I ended up with some oddities. My copy of Unknown Pleasures, that I bought from Our Price on Victoria Street, Westminster was an unusual Italian import, not FCL. I also have the Everything's Gone Green EP as a polygram Canadian imprint. #FactoryRecords

  3. Joy Division, Substance, 1988 on Factory

Posthumous collection of Joy Division singles put out in 1988 as a 1xLP and reissued in 2015 as a 2xLP by Rhino (a digital remaster). Substance was also used at the title for the New Order singles collection that came out in 1987 (with “1987” added).

Still looking for a good clean copy of Unknown Pleasures but I was glad to find this copy of Substance. The 2xLP version includes the “Pennine Version” of “Love Will Tear Us Apart” which was the b-side of the original single.

My copy—via a record fair at Mill No. 5—is the 2015 Rhino US edition pressed at Optimal GmbH on 180g vinyl.

  6. New Order, Confusion (FAC93), 1983 on Factory

This was the sixth single from New Order, put out by Factory in 1983 as a follow up to “Blue Monday.” Produced by and co-written with DJ Arthur Baker, it charted well in the UK – though clearly nothing could match up to the massive success and influence of “Blue Monday.”

My copy—via Waterloo Records in Austin TX—is actually an Australian pressing (Artarmon) “Released in Australia by Gap Records Under Licence.” Fun to have records from a continent I’ve never visited.

  9. 🇬🇧 New Order "Movement" – 1981

A bleak and beautiful debut rising from the ashes of Joy Division. Mechanical rhythms, spectral vocals, and a sound suspended between post-punk grief and synth-driven reinvention. A pivotal moment where mourning met momentum...

  12. Found in a box outside a Charity store, Bristol. As if it was waiting for me.

This vacation my retina tore, the NHS emergency treated me. I played with the idea of tear, and tear. Crying because if the rip. Then this placed itself in my pathway.

My dyslexic tendancies make finding the song lyrics in the jumble feel like an accentuation of my normal reading experience.

  14. In between books about #FactoryRecords I’m reading @pluralistic’s Pirate Cinema. It is right up my alley except I wish the protagonist had a bit more life experience, as talking about boners is not really the most exciting detail for me.
Cory wrote so many books in the last decade that I pretty much have an unlimited pile of them waiting.

  16. At Record Grouch in #Brooklyn today, glad to have heard from Audrey Golden, author of a book on the numerous important and totally obscure women behind #FactoryRecords, who were responsible for “recording #music, playing live gigs, running the label behind the scenes, managing and promoting bands, designing record sleeves, making films and music video” and more audreyjgolden.com/ #neworder #joydivision #journalism #books

  17. "The untold history of #FactoryRecords is one of women's work at nearly every turn" | Today (3/30/24) at Brooklyn's Record Grouch @ 5PM EST, author Audrey Golden speaks w/ critic Jenn Pelly and Cynthia Sley (Bush Tetras!) about her book on the unsung heroes of the legendary Manchester label tertulia.com/book/i-thought-i- #music #books #NYC #dance #postpunk

  18. #LesDisquesDuCrépuscle 🧵 3/7: There were a few new releases, and then suddenly this year they have really gone for broke! Originally released in 1981, “Chantons Noël: Ghosts of Christmas Past” is a festive compilation album updated with more recent tracks by Crépuscule and #FactoryRecords artists. lesdisquesducrepuscule.bandcam

  19. Our next spotlight is on number 254 on The List, which yours truly submitted (Mastodon handle: buffyleigh).

ESG (or, Emerald, Sapphire & Gold) is an iconic no wave/post-punk/art-funk band, founded in 1978 by three sisters from the South Bronx, Renee, Valerie, and Marie Scroggins. After recording 3 songs for their 1981 “You’re No Good” single with the infamous Martin Hannett for Factory Records, the single was expanded and released the same year on 99 Records as their self-titled EP. Both the single and EP contain what is perhaps their most well-known work, albeit indirectly – the instrumental “UFO” is one of the most sampled songs ever, used in at least 580 tracks by artists such as The Notorious B.I.G., MF Doom, Public Enemy, N.W.A, Beastie Boys, TLC, Nine Inch Nails, and even Miles Davis. “Moody”, the other song from their initial single, and the EP in general, was also a huge hit in clubs and the house music scene. The band played the opening night of The Haçienda, the legendary Manchester nightclub.

Come Away with ESG is the band’s first full-length, containing songs from their previous EPs (including an extended version of “Moody”) as well as some other great danceable tunes. For this album, the Scroggins’ sister Deborah also joined. As with the previous EPs, the sound is minimal, stripped-down, and funky, focusing on drums, bass, congas, and some vocals sprinkled here and there. While it would be nearly 10 years until their next release (partially due to 99 Records shutting down soon after Come Away with ESG), the band remained active into the 90s, and continues today.

And indeed, though the LP and band in general have been cited over the decades by numerous artists as being enormously influential, ESG has recently had a well-deserved resurgence in attention. The self-titled EP was revamped into a 2015 Record Store Day release called The Moody EP (which is how they came across my radar). Come Away with ESG (with new cover art) was reissued by Fire Records for its 35th anniversary in 2018, and a 33 1/3 volume dedicated to the LP was published in 2023. A documentary on the band, Are You Serious? The ESG Story, directed by Renee Scoggins, was just released in January, with screenings accompanying live shows.

If you’re looking into what New York City’s no wave genre/scene of the 70s and 80s entailed, make sure to include ESG in your playlist!

    UK reissue.

The version I have on my hands doesn't even have an image on Discogs, and when I bought it new last month at the record store it had a stamp of being put on the shelf in 2018. This compilation album I feel is similar to #factoryrecords lablemates #NewOrder's Substance, in that it shows a development from #PostPunk towards #alternativedance with a hint of #synthpop, not chronological. I will look into more by Section 25!

  22. ❝ I got goosebumps when I walked into the re-created Haçienda. One of my first gigs was there in 1986, supporting my brother’s band, the Mock Turtles. There was no legendary last night as depicted in the film. I got my climactic speech for that scene out of the way with a clear head, then took half an E. It was – what’s the fashionable word – an immersive experience. We weren’t particularly well behaved. ❞ → theguardian.com/culture/2023/f

  23. Peter Saville: The hunt is on to locate an object that truly qualifies as “a sign of the times”. In 1977, the first Factory club night in Manchester was advertised with a poster using the now-famous symbol of a health and safety warning, urging workers to protect their ears from loud noise. But the original sign used in the artwork is missing. theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/j #FactoryRecords #PeterSaville #GraphicDesign
