Bob Dylan, Oh Mercy, 1989 on Columbia
Dylan’s 26th studio album, produced by Daniel Lanois and recorded in New Orleans. “Political World,” “Where Teardrops Fall,” and “Everything is Broken” make a great opening trio on side 1 – but really a great album overall.
My copy—via Waterloo Records in Austin TX—is a Carrollton GA pressing with original inner sleeve from 1989.

Tears for Fears, Songs From The Big Chair, 1985 on Mercury
Sophomore album from Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, following The Hurting. Hard to imagine trying to follow up that record, but this went to number one in the US. “Shout” and “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” fueled that success.
They’ve been touring again in support of The Tipping Point but I’ve not managed to see them (other than via YouTube).
Like (much of) The Hurting, produced by Chris Hughes (who had previously been a drummer in Adam and The Ants under the alias Merrick).
My copy—via Waterloo Records in Austin TX—is a PRC Richmond pressing from the mid eighties.

New Order, Confusion (FAC93), 1983 on Factory
This was the sixth single from New Order, put out by Factory in 1983 as a follow up to “Blue Monday.” Produced by and co-written with DJ Arthur Baker, it charted well in the UK – though clearly nothing could match up to the massive success and influence of “Blue Monday.”
My copy—via Waterloo Records in Austin TX—is actually an Australian pressing (Artarmon) “Released in Australia by Gap Records Under Licence.” Fun to have records from a continent I’ve never visited.

John Hiatt, Bring the Family, 1987 on A&M
John Hiatt’s eighth studio album and his first on A&M. What a fantastic songwriter! Actually paid for by Demon Records in the UK, but picked up after being completed by A&M in the US.
Guests include Ry Cooder (doing harmony vocals on “Have a Little Faith in Me” as well as electric guitar and sitar work), Nick Lowe on bass, and Jim Keltner on drums, making this something of a proto-Little Village album. Also includes “Thing Called Love” that was later a hit for Bonnie Raitt.
My copy—via Waterloo Records in Austin TX—is a Columbia House club pressing (Carrollton) with CRC on the bottom of the rear cover.

Wilco, Cousin, 2023 on dBpm
Wilco’s 13th full length studio album, produced by Cate Le Bon, and recorded at the Loft in Chicago. The cover artwork is by Azuma Makoto – see Frozen Flowers 2023. Truly a fantastic Wilco album – if you’ve fallen off the Wilco train time to get back aboard.

Angel Olsen, Whole New Mess, 2020 on Jagjaguwar
Whole New Mess presents new takes on the tracks from Angel Olsen‘s 2019 All Mirrors: though actually the Whole New Mess versions were recorded earlier, in 2018 at The Unknown, a studio in a former church in Anacortes Washington. (It is labeled as “the primer and precursor to All Mirrors“).
It was produced by Michael Harris and mixed by John Congleton, but is just Olsen and her guitar where All Mirrors had a full band.
She performed earlier this year at the Cabot Theatre – great show which I neglected to post about here.

The CD finds new life among Gen Z collectors
Buying discs is an affordable extension of fandom — and comes wrapped in a Y2K aesthetic
John T. Kurz, owner of Waterloo Records in Austin, says that his used CD sales have remained consistent, even as his new CD sales wobbled during the rise of streaming.
