Ai is NOT going away for many reasons.

I have huge respect for #Doctorow because he is a shit stirer and the world needs shit stirers.

He is also a hypocrite, because he us using #Ai in his writing (and he will tell you why that's fine)

But to the subject at hand.
Even if #broligarchy Ai gets "switched off" for the peasants, the military and corporates will still use it.
The Chinese and the Europeans will still use it.

Software development is the most compelling, while you will hear many post how bad it is (mainly folks who don't use it), it doesn't write flawless code, but its used everyday and the x10 is real (my own use data point).

Infosec, Target lists (Lavender, Palantir), Form processing (eg Insurance), Customer "service" all real, all here, all very effective.

If you call a taxi in my town, LLM will take the booking instead of a human.

Doctorow is desperately trying to repeat his #enshitiffication bullseye...and while he is finding eager followers among the forest folk, who struggle to adapt and/or fight the machines his head is shoved up the wrong end of the reverse centaur.

Fundamentally, why Ai is not going away is because it removes humans from industrial process which crapitalists love to do and have excelled at since mid 1700s.

@aral Still wandering when looking at your posts and discovering if / how #SmallTalk can answer the #trust we need to increment ourselves and then extend out to #Gaza (a way to solve the whole trust #war thing or #community from wherever we all are to eventually get to them / us all ?)

e.g. If Mastodon & #Jitsi / #WebRTC aer good enough #bridge then neither seems to have regular community-making sessions itself - mostly one-way posts or "look here's another bad guy / #enshitiffication tool..."

I like the fact that in his latest piece, @Zitron zooms out to point out that the collective insanity of the AI bubble is not just an AI or tech thing, but a generally delusional pattern of behaviours in the stock market and those who are meant to analyse and report on it for investors, "line go up" being the pathological obsession that ignores any evidence to the contrary.

Call me a conspiracy theorist if you like but I'm convinced.

The last 2 decades have seen an increase in people using social media to protest, organise, collaborate, build community, kick against the machine, educate and inform. #Fascism can't have that!

#Enshitiffication with #AIslop was intentional. There has always been misinformation on t'net but most of us got quite good at spotting it and calling out the BS. Now the well is so poisoned. Academic and creative works are the worst hit.

Now they want us all to have digital I'Ds starting from a young age, so they can track and profile us. There will be no more safe spaces to protest, organise, collaborate, build community, kick against the machine, educate and inform.

The biggest threat to fascism is how we gather online, and they are taking that away from us one step at a time.

The Internet is a shithole

What drained me of power over the past years is this constant fight of debullshitting the Internet experience for me and others.

You always have to use an AdBlocker, VPNs to circumvent all sort of censorship - and for that matter change the location often else you still get blocked; find proper news sources then find their RSS, add to an RSS reader, try to read locally if these websites allow you to....else go visit their bullshit websites.

Youtube is still by far the biggest, or the only in most cases, video platform. Now even with an adblocker the youtube experience sucks - they autoplay videos, insert shorts into your face, make you click things you don't want, and now insert AI generated video description for videos.. So you have to use an app for youtube that removes these piles of poop. But these apps are constantly blocked and won't work all of the time...

I don't even want to think about search which has become a pile of nonsense. Full of fake AI websites and now when pretty much all search engines introduced AI summaries...makes searching a painful experience.

Even Reddit, which can still feel like a "community" of people posting stuff from time to time, is a garbage. Full of fake posts and bots, and no way you can use RSS to follow subreddits. Login to see some content....endless scroll....all a bazaar.

I have to fight with "free" Wordpress plugins that insert ads into your dashboard, I have to block AI Summaries in searches, I have to keep Freetube up to date and often when videos do not work there, open in Youtube. I have to read my news in a semi-broken RSS reader since some cannot fetch all of the news, I have to install a custom OS on my phone then block ads there too, but now some banking apps do not work....a constant loop of poop, to protect yourself and your sanity, because everyone is there to fucking slice you open for a view, a click, a like...

Always always a fight against this destruction of the internet even tho all I fucking want is to read some reliable science news, watch some educational videos from time to time, and post some content or search for content. What the actual fuck....

I know why this is: TRADE. Same reason why the offline world is a shithole full of destruction, garbage, less nature, all about consuming and shops. This is what happens when humans have a primary goal of trading. Same online, these platforms are about trading, your attention, data, currency in return for a service. So it is a normal "enshitification" of the online too.

At least I have Friendica, Peertube, Nextcloud, Linux (TROMjaro) and the like, that allow me to still use the Internet in a sane way.

But man...such a shithole the Internet has become. I can't even imagine how "normal" people use it without adblockers, with relying on youtube, facebook, tiktok and such platforms....must be hell in the brain for these people.

I used to LOVE the Internet back in the days. It was like a park where you met interesting things and people. Now is like a metrostation full of ads and merchants, where everyone is in a rush to go somewhere else.

i think these are the small things that actually (also) show how the platform does not work and is in decay.
another example is (personally totaly irrational) facebook feature where in the feed of posts you click on a video and it start playing. when you want to stop it you click on it again (like you would on any other [video] platform), but the video just goes full screen and continues playing!!! afaik this UI design is specific to fb.
