Scientific research discovered that human brains “sync up” when we collaborate. Co-creation patterns in software development do really work. These new findings add to the existing pile of research that others like Laurie Williams have already done regarding pair / ensemble programming.
Collaborative rule learning promotes interbrain information alignment:

Reading how "7 days of work was done in 5 hours", I am thinking back on how #EnsembleProgramming made a 6-month work be ready in a week.
We have no idea of the size of a thing before we implement it. I wish we weren't asked to guess, buffer and overexplain when we learn.

Industrial Logic now has #EnsembleProgramming cheat sheet. https://www.industriallogic.com/cheat-sheets/
I get joy in the fact that the rename started with me and @deniseyu when it spreads to sources I consider somewhat more authoritative.

"Interestingly, the AI smells can arise not only from relying solely on GitHub Copilot but also from solo coding.
This is because our brains have a natural tendency towards laziness and gravitate towards familiar and repetitive tasks, as these require less cognitive effort. This tendency can lead us to take shortcuts and overlook important considerations."

We need to make sure to put what was communicated into reality, until then we cannot assume that it's understood. And the best way to collaborate well is #ensembleProgramming.

Just finished reading #softwareTeaming a #mobprogramming, whole team approach.
Great book would highly recommend for anyone that is or thinking of teaming.
This now makes me a certifiable software teamer. Off to update my cv.

Are there any directories of companies that do ensemble programming? I know it’s niche, but I think if companies were to specifically make it part of their hiring pitch (and then actually follow through of course), it would be a big selling point. #pairprogramming #ensembleprogramming #mobprogramming

This week as manager included something very much akin to #EnsembleProgramming and oh my, that was powerful. I learned that people don't know things they should know. I learned that things come too fast without sufficient reflection to turn them to learnings. I learned that people could succeed better given more clarity through limiting things we are learning simultaneously.
I already made changes to provide slightly better support. I still think we should pair / ensemble more.

With #EnsembleProgramming, we talk about time together being worthwhile as long as we are either #Learning or #Contributing. Today I need to add that learning the same thing every day again is not really what I mean by learning. Learning should accrue. We need to figure out ways of practicing in a way where we are likely to retain information.

Invitation (not a pitch):
I find myself with time at the moment. Would like to see what’s happening in the real world (beyond conferences and streaming).
Can I come hang out with you (and possibly your teams)?
We can talk about what that looks like re silent observer all the way to “Throw him on a keyboard, but not under the bus!”

Finally making it to #AgilePDX #mobprogramming #ensembleprogramming #meetup tonight, after attempts for the past several months. I’m so excited. I 💚 #softwareTeaming & #collaboration. And getting there on #Trimet #bus. I’m lucky to have 2 routes nearby my house. (Also, it’s very hard to type on the bus.)

Cameras on. The facial expressions and body postures of the folks you're coding with is important information. Otherwise the person who talks the most "wins." Working as a team means learning to read each other. #EnsembleProgramming #SoftwareTeaming

Having so much fun doing #TDD in #EnsembleProgramming that I didn't notice I was getting hungry.
Stomach: Hey. TDD doesn't feed me.
Me: Well it does, indirectly. -

People still seem to think that for geographically distributed teams, meeting face to face is the key to success. I am of opinion that working together, like actually working together #PairProgramming, #EnsembleProgramming and sharing work as real team is much more key than traveling to meet people.
The perceived distance is almost as much of a choice as the physical distance. Show up for people, every day.

The power of working as a software team:
- 3 people are working on a feature. I join them. 1 person leaves.
- We implement part of a feature, which helps me understand what's going on. I take a turn at driving and we implement another part.
- 2 people leave for lunch, since we're in different timezones. Another person joins. Now, none of the original people are here, but the work keeps moving forward. #SoftwareTeaming #EnsembleProgramming #MobProgramming

What if we didn't find the best way to collaborate and develop software as a team yet?
What if some already did? What if #MobProgramming has many benefits over #SoloProgramming and is more fun and engaging? What if it is also beneficial from the business perspective?
How can we start an experiment in our company, and define parameters to evaluate its (business) advantages so that we know if it is interesting to allow (voluntarily) more teams to embrace #EnsembleProgramming

@the_qa_guy @alex_schl @lisihocke I have tried a lot of combos and emphasis over the years. At some point I was writing about those in my blog, but recently I have not been up to anything special - just a standard user for all things #EnsembleProgramming and #EnsembleTesting.
-
Setting up 3x 2hrs of #EnsembleProgramming around getting some legacy C++ code tested and I have a hovering manager who wants to "participate all meetings". I guess that means the manager is about to be writing some C++ code in this session then. That's what I expect of me as manager / tester when I join ensemble programming sessions. It's not a place of control but collaboration.
