  1. FORESTRY SLASH RISKS PERSIST POST-GABRIELLE AMID REGULATORY SHIFTS

  2. New forestry regulations are being questioned for their effectiveness in managing debris after Cyclone Gabrielle, with concerns that large-scale clear-felling on vulnerable slopes may continue.

  3. @peterw

#NewstalkZB, NZ’s leading RW news broadcasters told its listeners not to take meteorological warnings about the approaching Cyclone Gabrielle too seriously.
#CycloneGabrielle in Feb 23 was the costliest tropical cyclone on record in the Southern Hemisphere, with total damage estimated to be NZ$14.5 billion, in which NZ$3.18 billion are insurance loss.

“Months after Cyclone Gabrielle smashed Tairāwhiti [Gisborne, New Zealand], locals are still cleaning up the damage. The Side Eye travels to the erosion-prone region to meet the people asking hard questions about a plan for the future…”

  5. Climate disasters across Aotearoa this year have shown how urgently we need Govts to protect us from the industries that drive the climate crisis.

  7. @NotJustDNA

    Here's a suggestion worth consideration.

“Perhaps in our AI-driven utopian future, this geochemical fingerprinting could be sharpened up – poor land management that leads to a hillside being eroded and transported downstream onto someone’s property, could then yield a fine for the hillslope’s landowner.”

~ Martin Brook, associate professor of geology at the University of Auckland

  8. @ArrestJK Yes, he did go on to say he didn’t blame Chippy himself but there’s a lot of locals who are. I later heard about the failure of the river level monitoring hence the lack of warning. But in a way that makes #NewstalkZB politicising the NZ met service so much more appalling. I would support a class action against NZME. #CycloneGabrielle

  9. My cartoon in today's Dominion Post & online @NZStuff & syndicated across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Last Friday a road worker was run over trying to stop someone from pushing on ahead.

Even Waka Kotahi have asked for people to remain calm & patient.

  10. Like tiny fingers on mountainsides, hundreds of slips show where streams run, as water inevitably goes wherever water wants to go.

This is outside Gisborne. It came from the Stuff Live Blog and I can't locate it again to credit the photographer.

  11. I made a movie showing #CycloneGabrielle moving down over #NZ for the three days Sunday to Tuesday 12-14 February 2023.

Thanks to #MetService for operating their #weather #radar network that makes this possible.

  12. A large tree, uprooted in Cyclone Gabrielle, The cyclone has passed Auckland but is wreaking havoc as it tracks southward.

  13. Day 0 - transplant day.

Unbeknownst to us, the #StemCellDonor was flown here to #Christchurch from their home on the #NorthIsland, and donated their cells yesterday, on the same ward as my son; we didn't need to worry about whether the terrible weather #CycloneGabrielle would affect any of this!

So, the donated cells were fresh, and on hand, and in plentiful amounts. Isaac got a 144ml bag of slightly pinkish gloop transfused into him this morning.

  17. We have a casualty. This #truffular tree (tī kōuka) was bashed out of the hedge by the relentless wind. I had to cut it down this morning to clear the driveway. Now what will delivery drivers crash into, other than the fibre pedestal?

A small orange man calling himself the #Lorax is now standing on the stump and yelling at me. Hey buddy, I stayed the axe from this tree many times. #CycloneGabrielle

  18. Can I just say a BIG thank-you to everyone at #MetService who has been working day and night to analyse and forecast and warn, and most importantly to communicate to the public and authorities about #CycloneGabrielle, starting days in advance.

No-one is saying "Why didn't they warn us about this?"

  19. Midnight #MetService hand analysis of #CycloneGabrielle. Historic #storm. #weather #NZ

Will have been a sleepless night for many. Hope everyone is safe. Kia kaha.

Follow warnings at metservice.com/warnings/home . These were updated around 3 am this morning.

  20. Very windy at Channel Island right now from #CycloneGabrielle. SE 117 km/h gusting 146 km/h.

Lots more #NZ #weather observations can be seen by scrolling around the #MetService observations map at metservice.com/maps-radar/weat

  21. This will be my master thread for #CycloneGabrielle information for Aotearoa.
This thread will be kinda Auckland focussed, but I'll include any and all information for other areas as I find it - it's just because Tāmaki Makaurau is home (despite me being in BOP currently)

I'll try summarise the #AEM Standups, including the Q&As, although it won't always be at 1pm sharp because work.

I'm not an official channel, so please do check the official websites if you're concerned.

  22. Bookmark this link:

    otaki.synology.me/weather/rada

It shows an animation (animated GIF) of the last 24 hours of the #MetService #weather #radar composite over all of #NZ. If you allow it to use your location (this is not logged) it will put a red X on your approximate location on the map.

You can use this to look at the rain coming down over the country with #CycloneGabrielle.

This runs on my local server - best efforts - may not always be reliable. 🙂

  23. The very latest #ECMWF model run (based on midday Saturday data) has the centre of the #CycloneGabrielle in a very dangerous location at 1 am Tuesday, as shown below - just north of #Auckland.

Those in the area, please, please continue to make preparations, and follow official #MetService warnings from metservice.com/warnings/home and information from authorities.

    Stay safe.

  24. From the latest #ECMWF model run, this is the total expected rainfall over the five days to the end of Wednesday. Most places in the north and east of the North Island of #NZ can expect 100 to 300 mm of rain from #CycloneGabrielle, with the northern part of the Gisborne ranges exceeding 300 mm. #weather

  25. These cyclones are horrible. We were in #Gisbourne for the last one. Might be worth a thought during the next few days of #CycloneGabrielle as to what official feeds we really need in the #ActivityPub #Mastodon world in #Aotearoa - I'm thinking #GeoNet, #MetService, #Niwa, #RadioNZ, personally I'd love to see Rivers each have their own alert level feed too ... and who else?
