The Pitfalls of Cemetery Photography Take One - when you regrettably discover that not only is the sun in the wrong place, but you also need the flexibility of an Olympic gymnast just to squeeze between two large gravestones to take a shot 😂🪦

Very productive meeting at Orkney Museum this morning, but couldn't stop myself popping into St Magnus Cathedral churchyard afterwards 😁

Some rather well-worn Memento Mori gravemarkers from Warbeth Cemetery, Stromness, Orkney, snapped a few moments ago in-between running for cover from the sleet and gale force winds! 🥶💀

Attended an excellent lunchtime talk by Athanasios Tsakonas, for the Commonwealth Heritage Forum, about Kranji War Cemetery and Memorial in Singapore. I had no idea that the main memorial was built in the shape of a Hurricane fighter jet!

The coming end of the year is often a time for reflection. When I question whether I can continue my studies, due to poor health, I am reminded of this glorious grave marker from Crailing Old Parish Churchyard, the King of Terrors, and my enthusiasm is renewed ☺️

Some old Victorian cemetery posts and ironwork to start the morning (Tomnahurich Cemetery, Inverness)

Joseph Nightingale tries in vain to protect his wife Elizabeth (d.1731) as Death emerges from the locked vault to strike. Death is partially shrouded and missing a jaw. The dramatic Nightingale monument by Roubiliac at Westminster Abbey. A crowbar was once displayed alongside the monument - allegedly dropped by a robber who was startled to see the figure of Death in the moonlit Abbey #MementoMori #churches #CemeteryChat #skeleton #history #histodons #spooky #weirdhistory #18thcentury

Addition to original post. I was wondering if any fungi experts could identify what type of fungi are growing in the images below? Many thanks.

@Morticia
and of course there are similar graves in Paris, though they are probably a bit older and not quite the same style #cemeterychat -
For my very first contribution to #cemeterychat I thought I would share one of my favourite memorials from Tomnahurich Cemetery, Inverness, the Henry Christie monument, a confectioner by trade, who died in 1879. Its beauty never fails to impress every time I visit.

A first #cemeterytoot from me - as you might imagine I’m quite fond of wandering amidst tombs and memorials. I also rather enjoy hunting for urban graveyards that have been repurposed as parks or public spaces. To start with here is the grave of shipping owner Frederick Leyland in Brompton Cemetery. The scaled roof and floral designs are copper and the verdigris has stained the stone in places. It was designed in 1892 by Edward Burne-Jones. #cemeteries #histodons #tombs #CemeteryChat
