I made a personal research database of art works and historical events as part of my #S_T_Gill project. It allows for testing of theories and conclusions. It also generates (html) material for the project webpages and content for the digital maps.
The database evolved over years and was more about making progress than good design. I wasn't happy with it. So this year I've been redeveloping it from scratch with a view that it could be used again, by me or some other researcher.

New find: it appears George French Angas trimmed the left edges of two paintings to remove S T Gill's signature for his 1846 London exhibition. Paintings considered to be Angas's best, evidence shows, are actually by Gill. In this new overview I examine Gill's work for and relationship with Angas, 1844 to 1852. Gill as ghost artist. S. T. Gill is arguably Australia's most recognisable colonial artist. He was in #SouthAustralia from 1839 to 1851. With two new narrative articles and a new catalogue article, I've now mostly finished my many years work on this period. Welcome to my project on arguably Australia's most recognisable colonial artist, Samuel Thomas Gill. It's a blend of #catalogueRaisonné, biography, historical narrative and map atlas. The scope is from Gill's arrival in #SouthAustralia in 1839 up to his early time at the Victorian gold diggings in 1852-53.
Project update: Six articles on the diggings are now complete except for pending visits to Sydney and Adelaide to check on some undigitised sources. Good progress on at least two articles for 1839-1844 gap.
Later this year I'll write some more reflective material and some of particular interest post 1853.

Sometimes one extra data point makes a lot of difference to the cataloging.
The identity of "EJ" has been a mystery to me for 5 years but now I have a pretty good theory. The new data point was an #S_T_Gill sketch titled "Australian warfare, native skirmish" which I can now slot into the Gill catalogue. The EJ theory has a ripple out effect on some other artworks.

I took a necessary side-track from my project scope (S.T. Gill's 1840-1852 works) in support of understanding the above portraits. Here are (often referenced) 1860s retrospectives of the 1846 Horrocks expedition. Knowing their (late) date helps understand how "historically reliable" they are.

Greg Smith's #CatalogueRaisonné of #ThomasGirtin (1775-1802) is breathtaking. In a short life Girtin packed in much invention and innovation - from The White House at Chelsea to soaring architectural exteriors with light itself as the subject.
Here's a wash drawing with me once attributed to #JMWTurner but which possibly (based on paper type, size and technique) could be a Turner/Girtin 'co-production' of c.1794. If it isn't it doesn't matter: it cost me a measly £2.
