Great article, new in Social Science History, 'Wealth mobility in the US: 1860–1870' by Brandon Dupont & Joshua Rosenbloom uses a new linked census sample to show Civil War & slave emancipation reduced mean wealth & inequality in the South but the movement of individual wealth was highly volatile in both regions. Wealth status was much more fluid than today.
