  1. Bryce Ross kept the artist's name secret. Who was it sketching the gold diggings and looking to publish in #Melbourne or elsewhere?

Ross was an institution on the Victorian diggings in 1852. He reported weekly for the Melbourne Herald and his "Mems from the Mount [Alexander]" were reprinted in colonial newspapers. His office was at what is now Chewton near #Castlemaine. Ross was one of thousands of #SouthAustralia'ns on the diggings.

And why can't we find the artist's original field sketches?

  4. S. T. Gill is arguably Australia's most recognisable colonial artist. The story of Gill's 1852 passage from #SouthAustralia to the #Victoria goldfields has been a confused one. But it can now be teased out with help of digitised newspapers and a database approach. Who he went with adds to a sense of story.

  17. Welcome to my project on arguably Australia's most recognisable colonial artist, Samuel Thomas Gill. It's a blend of #catalogueRaisonné, biography, historical narrative and map atlas. The scope is from Gill's arrival in #SouthAustralia in 1839 up to his early time at the Victorian gold diggings in 1852-53.

Project update: Six articles on the diggings are now complete except for pending visits to Sydney and Adelaide to check on some undigitised sources. Good progress on at least two articles for 1839-1844 gap.

Later this year I'll write some more reflective material and some of particular interest post 1853.

  27. Religious observance on the Victorian gold diggings in mid 1852 was an informal outdoors affair. Here a group gather around a preacher on a Sunday at Forrest Creek. The crowd is generally well-behaved but follow the preacher's eyes!

(Working on this picture now and it gave me a chuckle.) #S_T_Gill #1850s #colonialArtAU

  29. @wragge Taking @wragge 's #Trove newspaper issues by state and year (CSV), I further looked into the impact of the 1852 Victorian #goldRush on newspapers. (It was hard to get staff with so many at the diggings.) From this data there is a big impact on #SouthAustralia and #Victoria itself and a smaller impact on #Tasmania.

I used @wragge ‘s #GLAMWorkBench to "Visualise the total number of newspaper articles in #Trove by year and state". I specified #1840s and #1850s as the date range. Attached workbench screenshot and chart showing a significant drop in articles in gold rush 1852.
