1843 was a turning point for #SouthAustralia shifting from a rural economy to the start of a mining economy. This spurred the visit by artist George French Angas.
This the third of my new articles this week in the #S_T_Gill #colonialArt project. #1840s

This is one of the earliest street scenes in #Adelaide - from 1840. It's in Hindley St where the Grand Chancellor is now. (From #StateLibraryNSW collection.)
These are among the early #SouthAustralia works by #S_T_Gill. This new article accompanies the early narrative I've just added to the project. #1840s #colonialArtAU #catalogueRaisonne

S. T. Gill is arguably Australia's most recognisable colonial artist. He was in #SouthAustralia from 1839 to 1851. With two new narrative articles and a new catalogue article, I've now mostly finished my many years work on this period. The narratives are a particularly fresh look at the artist within an economic context. A different and online approach to #catalogueRaisonne. #artHistory #S_T_Gill #1840s
My new article (narrative starting point): https://coombe.id.au/S_T_Gill/S_T_Gill_Early_Narrative_1839_to_1842.htm

CW: 1840s artwork Frontier Wars
This morning I found some historical context for "The Avengers". The context is likely 1842 murders at Port Fairy, Victoria. I think this now resolves past confusion over #S_T_Gill's sympathies - which were with the Aboriginal people and not the ambushing colonists. I've just updated the article to reflect this. #frontierWars #1840s

CW: 1840s artwork Frontier Wars
Last week I got to research at #StateLibraryNSW Sydney.
An artwork I "reidentified" is "The Avengers" by #S_T_Gill showing colonists about to fire on a group of #Aboriginal people. I date this to about 1844/1845 - a decade before his previous earliest known of this subject. #frontierWars #1840s #colonialArtAU

Reading "Ms & Mrs Gould" and finding similarities between John Gould and (the much younger) George French Angas in terms of ambition, Queen Adelaide patronage, commercial approach, format, and even appropriation of the works of others.
Angas intended to illustrate #SouthAustralia’s settlements, scenery, First People and any natural history not covered by Gould's "Birds".
Borrowed from #LibrariesACT where it is in high demand. #S_T_Gill #1840s #colonialArt

Welcome to my project on arguably Australia's most recognisable colonial artist, Samuel Thomas Gill. It's a blend of #catalogueRaisonné, biography, historical narrative and map atlas. The scope is from Gill's arrival in #SouthAustralia in 1839 up to his early time at the Victorian gold diggings in 1852-53.
Project update: Six articles on the diggings are now complete except for pending visits to Sydney and Adelaide to check on some undigitised sources. Good progress on at least two articles for 1839-1844 gap.
Later this year I'll write some more reflective material and some of particular interest post 1853.
You can follow the hashtag #S_T_Gill for updates - you don't need to follow me.

When classing objects into boxes, it's almost inevitable there'll be some left over.
This new article is a “miscellaneous” box. It has works by #S_T_Gill in the period 1844 to 1847 (that are not listed elsewhere). This view of the #Adelaide Plains has been misattributed to "E. Gill". Other #1840s works: Gill's "pipe light" theme, Mount Crawford, Black Hill, #SouthAustralia.
My latest article: https://coombe.id.au/S_T_Gill/S_T_Gill_Works_1844_to_1846.htm

So, old school pianists are like THIS, but modern school pianists are like THIS, right? Ha ha!
Maybe you had to be there.
1847 caricature cartoon showing the "old school" and "modern school" of pianists.
