  2. Casa Susanna is gone. The Catskills guesthouse where transfeminine people gathered through the '50s and '60s for twenty-five dollars a weekend — Sandy Ernest Allen drove out this year and found new construction on the spot. Old tree roots torn out of the ground. Maybe including the oak that held the sign. No plaque.

  5. Just a head’s up there’s a good deal of graphic imagery (both sexual and not) and strobing in this month’s #LaEsoterica offerings. If this isn’t for you I can recommend this episode of PBS’s “The American Experience” about Casa Susanna (youtu.be/3M1MFBSqRjY?si=RveYhK), a Catskills retreat for trans women, femmes and cross dressers in the 1950s and 1960s that was owned and operated by queer trans woman Susanna Valenti and her wife, Maria.

  7. @Tepal_cates Oh interesting, Thank for #sharing! It made me think of #documentary I saw not too long ago #CasaSusanna, an intimate look at a small group from the past. The way #community & #networking worked before #theInternet is fascinating. Also learned of #DianaMerry! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diana_Me

“[they] found refuge at a house in the Catskills region of New York. Known as Casa Susanna, the house provided a safe place to express their true selves.”

🥺 #CasaSusanna

  10. ICYMI: PBS aired their episode of “American Experience” about Casa Susanna (pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperienc) which was an idyllic hideaway for trans women and crossdressing men in the 1950s/1960s (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casa_Sus) It’s available for free on the PBS site

  11. Great #vintage photos and quotes here.

"In the #1960s, a group of cross-dressing men and #transgender women spent weekends at an upstate New York retreat unlike any other. Owned by Susanna Valenti and her wife, Marie, Casa Susanna was a private, modest property where guests could escape the constraints of societal norms and express their gender freely."
