  2. 🧵Cabral said that national liberation could not be achieved without the emancipation of women. He wrote that just as colonialism negated the autonomy of Guineans and Cape Verdeans, so too did patriarchal customs negate the autonomy of women. The instructions of the PAIGC soldiers reflected this: they had to respect local customs only insofar as they did not conflict with equal rights of men and women.

In practice, Cabral established a quota system ensuring that at least two of five elected members on village tribunals and councils were women.

  3. 🧵Cabral applied Marxist analysis to the social structure in Guinea. He recognised the significant physical force of the peasant class, but he argued that the peasantry in Guinea did not have active political consciousness, and thus they didn't act as the primary revolutionary subject. Cabral doesn't follow Maoism in this matter, as in China the peasantry had a history of revolting and political awareness.

Cabral inverts common Marxist class analysis, arguing that the only group equipped with the literacy and organisational tools to seize the state is the petite bourgeoisie. However, he identifies the petite bourgeoisie as a service class, not rooted in economic productivity.

So upon decolonisation the petite bourgeoisie could either inherit state power and try to preserve itself by becoming more bourgeois, or it could strengthen its revolutionary consciousness and ally with the working class. Cabral introduces the concept of class suicide.

Cabral argues that the petite bourgeoisie has more frequent contact with the colonisers, and is therefore more often humiliated. This leads to a higher level of political awareness of the need for liberation.

  5. 🧵 Cabral was assassinated on 20 January 1973, by disgruntled PAIGC members.

The PAIGC regrouped under new leadership. The assassination of PAIGC's leader was followed by some of its most ambitious offensives, as it destroyed several key Portuguese positions.

The military conflict reached a stalemate, with the PAIGC ruling over most of the country and the Portuguese holding on to major cities.

In september of 1973 the People's National Assembly declared independence unilaterally.

  6. 🧵 Cabral realized that the protracted war could only be sustained if his troops could live off the land. Being an agronomist, he trained his troops to teach local farmers better farming techniques. This increased productivity so they were able to feed their own family and community, as well as the PAIGC soldiers. When not fighting, PAIGC soldiers worked the fields alongside the local population.

Over the course of the conflict Cabral became the de facto leader of a large portion of what became Guinea-Bissau.

  7. 🧵 At first the PAIGC was preoccupied with legal-constitutional changes, with little to no results.

In 1959 a strike was organised in the port of Bissau, which was suppressed by force, leading to the "Pidjiguiti massacre", killing at least 50 people. This led to a complete transformation of the PAIGC and between 1960 and 1963 they prepared for armed struggle against the Portuguese.

From 1963 onwards Cabral led the PAIGC's guerrilla movement in Portuguese Guinea against the occupation. It evolved into one of the most successful wars of independence in modern African history, attaining independence for both Guinea-Bissau and Cabo Verde.

  8. 🧵 In 1953 he returned to Portuguese Guinea and conducted an agricultural census during which he traveled more than 60,000 kilometers. This allowed him to become intimately familiar with the people and land, which proved to be very helpful for the guerilla war he went on to fight.

In 1956 he founded the PAIGC (Partido Africano da Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde = African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde). He was also one of the founding members of the MPLA (Movimento Popular Libertação de Angola = People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola) later in the same year.

  9. 🧵 Amílcar Lopes Cabral was born in, 1924 in Portuguese Guinea (located in modern-day Guinea-Bissau) to Cape Verdean parents. He grew up in Cabo Verde and studied agronomy in Lisbon. As a student he founded the Centre for African Studies. At the time Portugal was a dictatorship so political associations were forbidden, but cultural organisations were allowed. Cabral used cultural events as a cover for dissident political activity against the dictatorship and promoting independence for colonies.

  19. "#Freire’s work and practice have inspired what has become a worldwide critical pedagogy movement. #Cabral is a centrally important, yet mostly unacknowledged, influence of this movement.I n the last prepared book before his death, subtitled Letters to Those who Dare Teach, Cabral’s influence on Freire seems to have remained central, as he insisted that “it is important to fight against the colonial traditions we bring with us”."
