"The 'wooly devil' is the 1st new plant genus discovered in a US national park in ~50 years... The plant was first observed by park volunteer Deb Manley, who promptly uploaded the unknown species to #iNaturalist, where an international community of #botanists assembled to identify the mysterious flower"

"In 1941, as Nazi forces laid siege to #Leningrad, a group of #SovietBotanists faced an unthinkable choice: eat their life’s work, a rare seed bank, or starve to death. This is the dilemma at the heart of #SimonParkin’s story about the world's first seed bank and its dedicated #botanists."

The Guardians of Earth’s Most Grotesque Flowers
https://atmos.earth/rafflesia-guardians-give-endangered-corpse-flower-new-life/"A motley crew of #Rafflesia enthusiasts are racing against the clock to save the #CorpseFlower—the largest flower in the world—from #extinction... Each species smells different—#botanists don’t know why—and each #flower is either female or male and needs to bloom simultaneously with its counterpart to reproduce in 24 hours before it starts rotting. Nobody can predict where, when, and if it’ll bloom again after that."

Need some clueful #botanists to advise on this: it's a Valerian of some kind; but is it Marsh (V. dioica) or Common (V. officinalis)?
Note: I'm well north of reported range; but there's a garden nearby that used to belong to a florist...

O #GardenersOfMastodon! Can anyone help me identify this #plant? If it's a tree, it needs to go, as it's too close to the house. If it's a shrub, we might be able to let it be. Current theories include: hibiscus coccineus, hawthorne, or maple.
Any ideas? Please repost! Thank you, plant people!
