  1. Hundreds gather to smell a rare flower blooming in London.

Hundreds of visitors gathered at Kew Gardens in London to see the rare blooming of the titan arum, often called the “corpse flower” for its strong smell resembling rotting flesh.

  2. Just a flower for you today.
Days are nice but too busy to go out and take more shoots.

  3. I specifically went to shoot this for the Symmetry challenge but decided to go with something less symmetric but more interesting.
    I do like it though.

  4. "To crop or not to crop" is the question.

I like details on those, but most people won't zoom in to look (plus bsky will probably make them mushy)
But tight crop rarely looks good.

  5. Busy but potentially productive day at work.
In the meantime some more prettiness for you.

Should I sign up for some portraits workshop to get better at it and also confident? 🤔

  6. 🍌☀️ #Bananas undergo a process called negative geotropism where the #fruit grows upward toward the sunlight rather than toward the ground.

This evolutionary trait allows the heavy fruit clusters to maintain balance while competing for light in the #rainforest canopy. Botanists at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, note that this unique growth pattern is what gives the fruit its characteristic curve.

  12. I was happy to be able to witness this carving of a monument over the course of 6 months from a solid cube of granite to the finished product. The sculptor ,Samantha Newman, was working in the cemetery down the street from me as an artist in residence to create this for an unmarked grave of adults and children who died of contagious diseases over 100 years ago.

  13. #KewGardens to host largest outdoor #exhibition of #HenryMoore’s #sculptures
Show will include 30 monumental pieces displayed across gardens and 90 works filling Shirley Sherwood Gallery

ooooooh. I'll put that in my diary for 2026

Wow. This is (a) super interesting in itself, and (b) good news for our ash trees. I've seen so many dying ash trees in my part of England, it breaks my heart. This is very encouraging news and congrats to the people at Kew Gardens and at Queen Mary, good work. Also a really well-written piece, hat tip to author #NatashaWard.

  19. All The Flowers Are For Me installation by Anila Quayyum Agha at the Shirley Sherwood Gallery, Kew Gardens 2023.

  20. We're sad to announce that around 8 trees were lost in Storm Darragh. This number could have been much higher if it wasn’t for our incredible Tree Gang.

The fallen trees and branches won’t go to waste - some will be mulched, while others will be carved into small products 💚

  21. #Botanists identify 33 global ‘dark spots’ with thousands of unknown plants theguardian.com/environment/20 paper: nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/do

"From a palm tree in #Borneo that flowers underground to a Malagasy #orchid that spends its life growing on other #plants, researchers are still making dozens of #NewSpecies discoveries every year... a new project led by #KewGardens is highlighting parts of the world where botanists should be concentrating their search."

I didn't see it yet myself. I had been sad that she was live in #KewGardens and me in France, but just found out that the event exists as a video! And 5x15 Stories is always a good recommendation for fascinating people. Soon they will bring Merlin Sheldrake as a highlight! 5x15.com/events/merlin-sheldra

  23. It's official, the Titan arum is in bloom! 💚

Known for it's horrid smell, this large plant only blooms for 24-36 hours. Make sure you stop by the Gardens to take a look (or sniff).

Can't make it this time? Keep an eye on our channels, as another Titan is set to bloom soon 👀

  24. I visited #KewGardens the other day (if you want the formal name, they’re the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew) in London. It’s a large site in outer #London, technically #Surrey. It has plants from all over the world and has many large #GlassHouses to simulate various climatic conditions.

This one dates back to the mid nineteenth century and is called the #PalmHouse and houses #tropical plants.

  25. @kewgardens is sad to announce that around 6 trees were lost at Kew in Storm Henk.

This number could have been much higher if it wasn’t for their incredible Tree Gang who maintain our 14,000 trees.

These fallen trees and branches will be mulched and added back to their Gardens. 🌳💚 #KewGardens #stormhenk

  26. This is the first book, I bought because of Mastodon and if this is the kind of book I read because of this app, I'm staying put. Spent wonderful hours imagining Kew Gardens without the airplane noise, wandered with William Hooker through the half built palm house and learned so much! Even though palms are the stars and ferns take a back seat, I congratulate everyone in advance for the pleasure of reading @KateTeltscher's Place of Palms
