  1. At a con. I had been going for a Matrix look, but it was too hot to keep the jacket on. Luckily I had a tanktop on (and, not to brag, the bulk to fill it). I caught myself in a mirror and realised I had accidentally cosplayed Duke Nukem.

  4. CW: re-intro! (click to reveal)

New year, new people arriving here... new re-intro post!

Jennifer here, old queer writer / musician / geek, based in Nottingham, England.

Music-wise, I write songs and play bass, as well as having violin skills and occasionally writing for orchestra. Latest just-for-fun music thing is practising on drum kit when I get the chance: nothing flash, just playing along to songs I like.

A big learning-interest for me right now is Systemic Modelling, a set of tools for catalysing collective intelligence in groups.

Work-wise, my main thing currently is the organisational side of (mostly online) courses for people to learn about SysMod. Being in & around all that is great for my own learning, so I'm pretty happy with work at the moment.

Covid-careful. Still following the science updates. Recently did a long blog post about having and mostly-recovering-from Long Covid.

Used to be a regular at BiCon the UK bi conference/ convention; dipped in again in 2025 when it came to Nottingham.

This year, I want to do more blog-writing and music-recording... and maybe catalyse a covid-careful social meetup of some kind, although limits of energy & time might hinder that wish.

In terms of party politics, right now I'm liking the look of what the Green Party are up to.

I've been on Fedi since late 2022 when I realised Twitter was headed down the dumper, and overall I really like it here.

Sometimes I post about little bits of sewing-mending I've done or button badges I've designed, or the odd pic (with alt text) of a tree or flower or moss.

Lived in Leiden NL for a few years as a child, went to school there, still speak some Dutch. I never seemed to see any Dutch tweets back in the Twitter days, I suppose because the algorithm there was segregating the languages. I like how the Fediverse software doesn't do that, thereby assisting me to keep that bit of my brain ticking over :-)

If you want to know more, ask &/or follow :-)

  9. CW: a nice thing - yesterday's BiCon pre-meet

Hosted a BiCon pre-meet yesterday, online. Conveniently there were exactly 12 people there for most of it (not counting me), perfect for dividing into threes! I kept switching the groups so that people could meet different people.

We talked about how we'd each like BiCon to be, and how we could make it more likely to turn out that way.

Top tips: get enough sleep, eat enough food, and don't try to do everything!

Then we also talked about what contribution we might like to make - though I also said, just being there and being friendly and making BiCon more varied is a contribution in itself :-)

Several of the people who'd come along turned out to be already signed up to offer workshop sessions, so we heard a little bit about those.

Two tasks currently available if you want one are (a) keeping an eye on the Zoom setup for the hybrid events, (b) leafleting at Pride on Saturday, so that more people know about BiCon for Sunday. There's usually also opportunities to assist with being welcoming at reception.

In-person BiCon starts tomorrow, and runs Friday till Sunday. The venue is a couple of buildings belonging to the girls' high school, in between the Forest and the Arboretum. I tagged along for a site visit the other day and I think it's pretty good for air quality.

Apparently about 70 people have booked so far. It's also possible to buy a ticket on the day, so that might not be the final total.

As I reminded people last night, you don't have to be bi to come to BiCon! And if you _are_ bi, you don't have to be any particular amount of bi :-)

  10. CW: what I plan to contribute to BiCon (July 2025, Nottingham and online)

I have plans for a few different things...

    • Wednesday evening, 23 July, I'm hosting a 1-hour online thing that'll be open to whoever's already booked by then. It'll be a somewhat structured talky session on a theme of "inventing the BiCon you want", and an opportunity to meet other people who are going. Newcomers especially welcome :-)

    • On the Friday morning at in-person BiCon, I'm offering a session called "Curiosity Skills". It's about which kinds of questions are genuinely "open", versus which kinds of questions allow your own assumptions and biases to sneak in! It'll be partly me explaining, and partly the chance for some little conversational experiments, to notice how the different questions work in practice.

    • Subject to finding a nice quiet airy place to do it, I plan to run a mask-decoration session at some point on the Friday. I'll bring a few different kinds of masks, plus lace, beads and sequins, and some past experience of how to decorate masks without compromising the seal or the breathability. I'll invite donations for the materials. Decorate your mask for Pride! or for BiCon partying! or just because you like to :-)

    • Also I will bring my badges and zines, and have them on sale!

    =

By the way, if you might come to the Wednesday evening online bit, let me know what time you'd like it to start, because that's a question I have open at the moment. Could be 19.00, 19.30, 20.00. For myself I don't really mind, but I'm aware that some people have teatimes or child-bedtimes that can't easily be moved.

  11. CW: BiCon coming up, Fri 25 to Sun 27 July 2025, Nottingham and online

BiCon comes to Nottingham this Friday!

It's a masking-friendly, though not mask-required, event, in a venue which is said to be pretty good for air quality.

There's also an online-only option, which I went to myself last year when the in-person side wasn't in Nottingham. We had a nice little group being companionable on the Zoom, with some of the in-person sessions running as hybrid.

You don't have to be bi to go - just bi-friendly and trans-inclusive. Typically it does include some non-bi people who just like the vibes :-)

    Sliding-scale admission prices:
    - in-person weekend tickets £65 down to £20
    - in-person day tickets £40 down to £10
    - online weekend tickets £20 down to £4.

Venue this year is two of the buildings belonging to the girls' high school, in between the Forest and the Arboretum. Nearest tram stop is High School. Nearest bus lines are brown, green, yellow, and purple.

There's usually a variety of session options in the day: some talky and some not; some bi-themed, some unrelated. In the evenings there'll be social space. Some people will go and march as a group in Notts Pride on the Saturday. I'm going to host an online pre-meet on the Wednesday evening.

Myself I've booked for the weekend, but in reality I might only make it to the online-Wednesday-pre-meet and the Friday, esp if I do go to Notts Pride on the Saturday. I might be all used up by Saturday night. (Even pre-covid I might've run out of steam by then :-) ) But if I didn't come in on the Sunday, I probably would still join in at least a little bit online.

More below on what I'm planning to contribute!

Feel free to ping me if you have questions :-)

  12. My first #BiCon was also the first time I entered a trans-only space. I was very insecure back then about whether I was “really trans enough” but everyone there was so welcoming and supportive. I’m glad to see this hasn’t changed one iota! :BlobhajTransPrideHeart: #BWithTheT mastodonapp.uk/@grantdenkinson

  13. CW: BiCon

    @Shrigglepuss

    Haha thanks!

[For anyone else - the "grading" was in my description of #BiCon! I said it's pretty good on disability stuff, usually flat access to main spaces; not full-on covid-careful but there's likely to be numerous people masking; & I can't give top marks for anti-racism due to the prevalence of well-meaning white people but they are trying :-) Or along those lines.

Also said it's open to all bi-friendly people - you don't have to be bi or even know what you are.]

  14. Said a word myself - with this quote:

‘If you have come to help me you are wasting your time. If you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together’.

    uniting.church/lilla-watson-le

(meaning in particular bi liberation & trans liberation)

& mentioned BiCon coming to Nottingham this year.

  15. BiCon 2025 will be in Nottingham, non-residential, Fri 25 to Sun 27 July 2025 - same weekend as Notts Pride which is on the Saturday.

BiCon venue will be the Girls' High School, not far from the Arboretum or the Forest. I don't expect it'll be full-on covid-careful but I'm sure there'll be numerous people wearing masks. I'll probably go to at least part of it.

BiCon is open to bi-friendly non-bi people too!

  20. Also from the "Unreasonable adjustments" workshop: A perennial challenge in access work is finding official evidence for things you already know perfectly well are true!

    #BiCon #access #disability

  21. Some nice tips from the "Unreasonable adjustments" workshop:

    1. if you go to a venue and it's actually good for access, share the info on Euan's Guide so other people know!

    2. venue acoustics and noise levels are a kind of access variable (esp for people with noise sensitivities)

    3. colouring-in pages available as a "while you're waiting" activity can make a place more accessible :-)

    #BiCon #access #disability

  22. It's happening!

Now in a presentation by James from the Equality Network. Couple of great cartoons on the slides already :-)

    #BiCon #online

  23. They did predict that the online component might be a bit hit or miss, due to lack of wifi at the venue, and if it fails to a significant level, we're supposed to get our money back.

Ooh, "host has joined". That's promising :-)

    #BiCon

  24. Seems like the #BiCon folks are having trouble with their online bit, because I'm still just seeing the classic "Waiting for the host to start the meeting"! and the welcoming session was supposed to start at 9.50!

  25. Reminder that a subsection of BiCon is online tomorrow! (Saturday 30 Nov 2024)

    Tickets on a sliding scale.

  27. CW: BiCon, Sat 30 Nov - online bit

Pleased to see that people have been able to put together an online element for this year's BiCon!

BiCon is 2 days this year (non-residential), and the online bit is just for the Saturday.

I might actually go to that!

    Thanks to everyone who's contributed.

  28. Have been pondering the last one and I guess that is why I was thinking it might be a productive workshop. Was thinking about bisexual = attracted / having sex with multiple genders but for some of us attraction / sex isn’t same as fancying doing intercourse / oral / manual which could then include BDSM, Ace or other.
Am also helping make some of the sessions happen online. #bisexual #community #London #BiCon #BiCon2024

  29. It is the birthday of #Apollon today, day 7 of the ancient Athenian month #Thargelion. Apollon is the younger twin brother of Artemis and an archer like her. He is the boyfriend of all nine Muses and therefore a skilled musician and god of the arts. He also has numerous male lovers in myth, a true #bicon.
Celebrate his birthday by reading a hot story about the most beautiful god:

  30. CW: BiCon UK update

No residential BiCon in 2024, for lack of a team. I'm not disappointed, because I was never convinced it could be done in the remaining timescale without burning (more) people out.

Someone (not sure if they want to be named here) is thinking about maybe organising a BiFest in Birmingham in the summer! i.e. a one-dayer.

And there's been a bit of talk about doing something online.

  31. Update on the BiCon archives/memories project: next Zoom meeting will be Tuesday evening, 12 September 2023. As before, @xanna is collecting email addresses from people who want to be kept in the loop.

My guess is that quite a bit of this coming meeting might be about the logistics of cataloguing, storing & making available the info, especially the resources which would be most useful to incoming teams. But there could be other topics too :-)
