  5. CW: "COVID Consciousness as a Subculture" - article from UMNIA

I read this article yesterday and I'm still musing on it. There's something I really like about the idea of framing our position & commitments as "a subculture". That rings true to me.

    Some snippets from the article:

"the COVID Conscious community’s vision for the future lives in the ever-present now – without denial."

"This pragmatism allows for an actual future, not a fantasy future"

"we have an aesthetic ... we have shared resources, language and references"

"Referencing the past is essential, but copying it reflexively is unproductive."

"While solutions aren’t always easy, we believe they exist—whether it’s masking, clean air, COVID-safe events, or free testing and vaccinations, our resolve remains: we’re not giving up on a good future."

"this community spans drag kings, cartoonists and activists, musicians, rappers"

"We’re showing that there’s hope and liberation on the other side of a realistic risk assessment – and there’s no need to pick and choose safety based on the criteria set by capitalist forces."

  6. Nice write-up in The Sick Times, of people making a success of covid-careful music shows.

"Her solution was to rent out a club herself in order to set her own standards ...
"... people get it. Many people thanked me and sent me messages like, ‘Thank you, I’m chronically ill. That’s really nice to think of me.’”"

“When I organized my first show … I had no idea how well it would do, but we actually sold out pretty fast!”

  7. CW: "Covid Conscious Communities Survey"

"Hi, my name is Jamie and I am doing my master's thesis on Covid conscious communities. I am a social anthropology student at Stockholm University. I myself am Covid conscious and chronically ill/disabled, and with my thesis I hope to highlight the importance of Covid conscious communities and the many things that can be learned from them."

  8. CW: mask decoration shop! (not mine, just sharing)

"I started making mask chains in 2025 because I wanted my respirator to look like an intentional part of my outfit. I found that this increased my confidence when interacting with other people. I enjoyed making them so much that I decided to start selling them to raise money for Breathe Easy Sheffield, a volunteer-led organisation working to make indoor social and cultural spaces safer, more inclusive, and more accessible."

  9. CW: re-intro! (click to reveal)

New year, new people arriving here... new re-intro post!

Jennifer here, old queer writer / musician / geek, based in Nottingham, England.

Music-wise, I write songs and play bass, as well as having violin skills and occasionally writing for orchestra. Latest just-for-fun music thing is practising on drum kit when I get the chance: nothing flash, just playing along to songs I like.

A big learning-interest for me right now is Systemic Modelling, a set of tools for catalysing collective intelligence in groups.

Work-wise, my main thing currently is the organisational side of (mostly online) courses for people to learn about SysMod. Being in & around all that is great for my own learning, so I'm pretty happy with work at the moment.

Covid-careful. Still following the science updates. Recently did a long blog post about having and mostly-recovering-from Long Covid.

Used to be a regular at BiCon the UK bi conference/ convention; dipped in again in 2025 when it came to Nottingham.

This year, I want to do more blog-writing and music-recording... and maybe catalyse a covid-careful social meetup of some kind, although limits of energy & time might hinder that wish.

In terms of party politics, right now I'm liking the look of what the Green Party are up to.

I've been on Fedi since late 2022 when I realised Twitter was headed down the dumper, and overall I really like it here.

Sometimes I post about little bits of sewing-mending I've done or button badges I've designed, or the odd pic (with alt text) of a tree or flower or moss.

Lived in Leiden NL for a few years as a child, went to school there, still speak some Dutch. I never seemed to see any Dutch tweets back in the Twitter days, I suppose because the algorithm there was segregating the languages. I like how the Fediverse software doesn't do that, thereby assisting me to keep that bit of my brain ticking over :-)

If you want to know more, ask &/or follow :-)

  12. CW: covid-careful meetups, England

Yesterday I was enthusing to a friend about the "Breathe Easy" groups, and it's occurred to me I should enthuse here too!

"Do you enjoy going out and socialising, but feel cautious since the COVID-19 pandemic? Are you avoiding crowded and indoor venues? You are not alone! ...

"Breathe Easy Sheffield and Breathe Easy London are both small community groups hosting regular COVID-safer socials and other one-off events."

Recently I joined in for an online "watch the same event and then have a chat" with some folks from the Sheffield group, and enjoyed it. They also do in-person events about once a month, I just haven't been to one (yet) as it's out of town for me. Great to be able to swop useful info as well.

  13. CW: covid-careful "Resilience Toolkit" events - Sheffield, Leeds, Bristol, London, Glasgow

"In these sessions, Nkem will offer an introduction to the Resilience Toolkit, focusing on embodied self-awareness as a foundation for liberatory relational and collective work. ...

"Together, participants will practise real-time regulation tools that harness the body’s innate biology to settle overactive and pdetrimental responses – reclaiming energy, creative flexibility, and connection to ourselves, one another, and our shared liberation. ...

"Masking is mandatory - we will have some spare masks available at the venue. Full COVID policy will be shared via email once you have registered."

  14. CW: Leeds area covid-careful live gigs

Not me, just wanted to enthuse & pass it on!

"We are covid cautious musicians living in Leeds and have been involved in DIY music for the last 20 years. We have played in several bands and have organised over 150 DIY shows so far. ...

"We miss live music and we miss community so we have decided that we should put on COVID safer shows ourselves! So here we are!"

  16. Thinking about... What if we had a covid-careful hand-chime group as well as the covid-careful string orchestra?

Chimes are among the most accessible, most immediately-fun instruments to play.

Hence more "catchment area" of potential "masked musicians", hence venue hire more feasible. Could have both groups same evening.

Any covid-careful people around #Nottingham who might like a new little musical adventure?

  17. New yesterday!

  18. Thinking again today about possible forms of covid-careful gatherings for Nottingham.

Actually I kind of want to blog about this - about how my thinking has evolved, what I think might be possible now, and so on. Not sure when I might get around to that. But at least got as far as talking with a friend about it today!

  19. CW: covid-carefulness / orchestra thoughts 2/n

What I've been thinking about is re-engineering _towards_ that direction.

Maybe to build momentum towards a covid-careful orchestra, we'd need some covid-careful other things? maybe just a covid-careful #Nottingham meetup for starters. Cast the net wider, get going, and even if we never found enough musicians in the end, it'd be something good.

So yeah despite the recent lack of posting here, it's still on my mind!

    #CovidCareful

  20. CW: Reusable respi masks - question

Covid-careful people, is there a good source of comparison info on reusable respi masks where you just swop the filters? A friend was asking me about those recently, and I've not really looked into them so couldn't advise.

I know there's Fit Test the Planet, but I don't recall them giving recommendations on that kind, correct me if I'm wrong.

  22. CW: covid-careful voting, UK, 2/n

The voting papers should then be posted to you. You get a ballot paper, an envelope to put it in so it's secret, another bit of paper which iirc you have to sign, & a pre-paid envelope to post it in.

Then you can either post back your vote in advance, or take it to the polling station on the day. And new at the recent local elections, if you take it to the polling station you have to fill in even _another_ little form!

  23. CW: covid-careful voting, UK

I don't want to take off my mask in the polling station! So my work-around these days is to get a postal vote.

You still have to register to vote "ordinarily" at gov.uk, if you hadn't already - by 18 June 2024 for this next election.

Then you apply for the postal vote, by 5pm on 19 June:

  24. CW: cognitive framing of covid risks

You know when people are like "you have to live your life", and it means acting as if covid doesn't exist?

I was thinking, it's as if they have covid risks conceptualised as a one-dimensional measurement spectrum like so:

    {No fun, no risk} ............... {Fun and risk}

For me, it isn't like that: there's a quadrant which is "highly rewarding and little or no risk".

  25. "Clean Air Club Is Organizing Musicians to Make COVID-Safer Shows and Spaces"

"Clean Air Club is a volunteer organization that provides free air purifiers to Chicago artists and touring musicians, so their shows are safer for the artists, audiences, and staff at the venues. The organization was launched in Chicago, but Clean Air Club and its offshoots now provide air purifiers and far-UVC lights to artists & venues in other cities."

  27. CW: Covid erasure grump

Negotiating covid precautions, and the other person uses the expression "if it would make you feel more comfortable".

Wrong framing, people. It's not about how I feel! It's about whether specific viruses do or don't have the opportunity to get into my body!

I mean yeah, I _do_ feel uncomfortable when that risk is present - but that's a signal, not the actual point!

(I didn't take my vexation out on them. They don't know.)

    #covid #CovidCareful #CovidErasure

  28. Haven't posted here for a while. There weren't quite enough people to start the orchestra in September like I wanted, and I ran out of steam a bit. The winter was always going to be the "off season" anyway.

Now I've come round to thinking that maybe the orchestra needs to function as part of a wider network of covid-carefulness - which is also something I'm interested in contributing to.

So for the covid-careful people of Nottingham... let's see what's possible.

    #Nottingham #CovidCareful

  29. @ECityMom You're welcome! I've discovered a bunch of great cafés, thanks to https://www.coffeepass.ca/ and I'm also in a craft beer Meetup group so that's pretty excellent for sampling new breweries. I'm #COVIDCareful but I also need some socializing so some of these activities are essential for me.
  30. CW: Covid, vaccines, asking for advice

Since several people liked my post above #AskingForAdvice about the #Novavax versus #mRNA #covid19 #vaccines, I thought I'd share this article from Science magazine that I found on the subject: science.org/content/article/sh.

It sounds like overall more research is needed, like so many other things related to #covid. But I appreciate folks weighing in with their knowledge of the #vaccine options and #ImmuneResponse!

And ultimately, we're still in a #pandemic. #CovidIsNotOver, and the best thing we can all do to protect each other and ourselves is to #MaskUp and get the latest vaccine, whether it's Novavax, #Pfizer or #Moderna.

If other folks who are #CovidCautious or #ZeroCovid or know about #Immunology or #epidemiology want to weigh in, please do! I've boosted several responses from folks giving more info, some in favor of mRNA vaccines and some in favor Novavax.

Antivaxxers and covid deniers will still be blocked.

  31. #Covid outcomes

I see the medium to long term outcomes splitting into three groups (survivors -- people who died early excepted)

    1. Early #COVIDCareless This group is testing how many infections a body can take before breaking down. The number will vary, and it won't be uniform, but I expect 2024-25 will see this group crossing double digit infections, and showing significant death.

1a. Late #COVIDCareless This group abandoned precautions sometime this year or last .. see #1 with a delay of 2-3 years.

    2. Infected 1x (or low #s) + #CovidCareful : Still going to suffer long-term immune deficiencies, until underlying persistence is tackled. 10yrs? Some of this group might stumble on to a prophylactic that works.

    3. Uninfected + #CovidCareful Very small numbers here, should see lifespans pre-2019 or longer as they are now also not getting sick from flus etc.

Unfortunately group 1/1a are the vast majority of the population.
