Even though this piece was published more than a century ago, to my ear it still sounds refreshingly modern. As I listen to it on a loop, I feel myself breaking out of a late romantic sound world which I do not reject but recognize as one that can for me all too easily become one of cliche, lush comfort, and mere reassurance.

I try, and at times attain, what one might call listening "success" with works of the paradigmatically modernist Second Viennese School.
At other times, though, I just feel lost.

So I feel grateful to Bartok for composing music that is modern, not necessarily always "easy", yet which disproves the equation of "musical modernism" with "unintelligibilty".
