  1. I shall be at the TasPop Geek Market in Burnie tomorrow! If you're in the area (staggeringly unlikely I know) do drop by and grab one of my books.

  4. I've been fussing over the next chapter for a while. I couldn't figure out who it was about, or how they would be involved.

Today I got the opening. That nailed everything else and I got a thousand words down.

Do you peeps find a good opening will kick the story along? Or do you write in bits and join them up later?

  5. Who in your work is really crass and unpleasant? Because those people exist and should be in your work.

  6. Is there anything profound left to say in writing? Are we just re-treading old ground? Does new context expand or contract previous realisations?

    Some genuine thoughts, please.

  7. My favourite thing I wrote recently that may not make it into the final cut:

"If there was an award for being lazy I'd definitely win. But I'd send someone else to collect it on my behalf."

What's a good line that you haven't been able to use, yet?

  8. Do you ever use abstract or nonsensical techniques in your writing? I've been wondering how to handle a dream sequence..

  9. What are your character's death goals? I'm sure they have life goals but what about when they die? What do they think their funeral would be like? How will they be remembered?

  10. How might you make your work more positive? How might you make it more negative? if you think you have gone far enough, ask yourself, "How far can I go?"

  11. Have you ever made a mistake in your writing that turned into something great? Desolation started because I typed ballroom and auto-correct came up with brawl room. Then my brain went, oooo!

  12. What unique moment in time does your novel occupy? It's helpful to have something significant happening, not jut in your character's lives, but in the world in general. This can add a strong degree of realism and flavour.

  13. What cycle does your story run on? For instance, a rural story, in spite of what many city-based authors think, will run on a cycle of planting and harvest. All major scenes in the story should revolve around those activities. Perhaps you're characters are putting on a theatre show, so rehearsals, bump-in, tech, dress, these are your scene points. Please do a little research on your setting.

  14. Do you write from different points of view? How do different characters perceive the same event? Who is right (if any)?

  15. The villain doesn't necessarily have to be an actual moustache-twirling, volcano-lair baddie. But they must represent something the MC opposes at the their core.

  16. What level of intimacy do you present in your work? Do you dig down to all the squishy noises or pan tastefully to the rhythmically wafting curtains?

  17. #WritersCoffeeClub
Do you read outside your era, country, or language?

Difficult to read outside a language you don't speak. I'll read translations, sure. Many from other countries, and times.

  18. What is your character's price? It's lovely to say that you hero could never be bought, but way more interesting to dig deeply enough into their moral make-up to find a limit.

  19. If there are any #SciFi authodons out there who need an idea for a strange encounter, how about a nuclear powered man-hole cover? (story in alt-text)

  20. #WritersCoffeeClub 4: What software do you use to write?

I started out with pen and paper, because nobody owned computers. When I first began sending stuff around it was from the Macintosh SE printed out on a dot-matrix printer from the bank at the University computer lab.

Nowadays I use Libre Office. It's quite fancy by comparison.

  25. Your character is assigned a job by someone who doesn't speak the same language as them. Something gets lost in translation.

  26. #WordWeavers 8 Nov: Has another author ever inspired you to change anything about your writing?

I've learned a couple of things not to do, but most of my stuff is on voice from character (1st person, or near 1st), but story structure is my big struggle. Most of that comes from Classics, Euripides or Shakespeare, from having performed in them a lot as an actor. But plays are waaay shorter than novels.

  27. #WritersCoffeeClub 8/11. What does your most productive writing space look like?

Anywhere with room service. All those annoying chores taken care of, no laundry, washing up, cooking. I could seriously get so much done!

  28. You're using furlongs and chains in your medieval fantasy novel, aren't you? What about your bronze age fantasy? Yojana anyone?

  29. It helps is if you give minor characters a catchphrase. Or a specific gesture, or item of clothing. That extra bit of detail you can throw in when the MC meets them on two separate occasions can help the readers remember them.

  30. Strict grammar is important to avoid confusion and offence. Editors can help with this a lot.
