Quote of the day, 23 August: Hermann Cohen
Before ascending again into heaven, [Jesus Christ] appointed his representative on earth; he founded his visible Church, and within his Church he also established the pontifical kingship in the person of Peter.
He said to Peter: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. And remember, I am with you—and with your successors—always, to the end of the age” [Matt. 28:18–20]. “Whoever listens to you listens to me” [Luke 10:16]. Whatever is done against you, I regard as done against me. Whoever insults you insults me; “whoever is not with me is against me” [Matt. 12:30]; “whoever welcomes you welcomes me” [Matt. 10:40].
Therefore, my brothers, whoever insults the Vicar of Jesus Christ attacks Jesus Christ himself; and whoever opposes the sovereignty of God’s Vicar on earth declares himself, like Satan, against the King of kings himself! Qui non est mecum, contra me est!—“Whoever is not with me is against me!” [Matt. 12:30].
