Pope Leo XIV: “You Must Go On”
The following is an excerpt from a homily delivered by Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A., then Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, during a fraternal visit to the Diocese of Chiclayo, Peru, on Sunday, 11 August 2024.
We encounter the prophet Elijah. He feels tired. He feels like his mission has failed. He no longer wants to continue.
In his prayer, after a full day in the desert, he says: “Enough, Lord! Take my life. I am no better than my ancestors” [1 Kg 19:4]. He lies down under a broom tree and falls asleep.
Maybe he thought that was the end.
But, as we hear in the reading, the Lord never abandons us. Not only does He not abandon us, but He often pushes us and says: “Get up! You must go on. I will not leave you alone. I will feed you. I will give you what you need to continue.”
In this case, the angel of the Lord came to Elijah, gave him bread, gave him nourishment, and said: “Eat, for the journey will be too much for you.” And Elijah, attentive to the Lord’s word, ate, got up, and continued on his way [1 Kg 19:7–8].

To stand before the face of the living God—that is our vocation. The holy prophet set us an example. He stood before God’s face because this was the eternal treasure for whose sake he gave up all earthly goods.
He had no house; he lived wherever the Lord directed him from moment to moment: in loneliness beside the brook of Carith, in the little house of the poor widow of Zarephath of Sidon, or in the caves of Mount Carmel.
His clothing was an animal hide like that of that other great penitent and prophet, the Baptist. The hide of a dead animal reminds us that the human body is also subject to death.
Elijah is not concerned about his daily bread. He lives trusting in the solicitude of the heavenly Father and is marvelously sustained. A raven brings him his daily food while he is in solitude. The miraculously increased provisions of the pious widow nourish him in Zarephath.
Prior to the long trek to the holy mountain where the Lord was to appear to him, an angel with heavenly bread strengthens him. So he is for us an example of the gospel poverty that we have vowed, an authentic prototype of the Savior.

Given some of the replies, I feel like I have to respond somewhat seriously now to a post that was about 80-90% a joke.
1) I do not, and have never believed, nor said, that #Jewish stories are not and cannot be interesting and entertaining, nor that they have not been conveyed.
2) My point had a lot more to do with the types of stories that are told, the assumptions that go into them and how they tie in with #Christian views of the world, standing in contrast with Jewish views, most especially the severe differences in "End of the World" stories.
3) As some of you demonstrated, portraying Jewish #mysticism was not as taboo even 100 years ago.
4) #Elijah stories that center on shared beliefs, or on documented history, are certainly told (as I acknowledged in the categories in my initial post). The example I gave with him was about the more "#mystical" aspects, beliefs about his afterlife and ours, same as the elements of #Christianity they portray.
