@egonw @dingemansemark Hidden gems is another term people have used. When I was on the PLOS article-level metrics team, I proposed using the PDF downloads to HTML views ratio to find articles that weren't necessarily the most highly viewed but were more deeply engaged with - the assumption being that downloading the PDF indicated greater interest from that reader.
