Gave a short online lecture on altmetrics today. Main point: altmetrics measure attention, not quality. Sometimes they capture real interest - sometimes just noise. Attention ≠ impact.

Just finished a draft to a paper that we first conceived with @lariviev and @stefhaustein back in 2015 (!!). It's been hanging over my head for 8 years. The paper is about Second-order citations—an #altmetrics concept first described by Priem and Costello in 2010, but that nobody has ever tried to materialize. Together with Stef and Alice (of the #scholcommlab), we did a small case study as a proof-of-concept. It's small, but has incredible potential. Excited to post it as a preprint soon(ish).

This is the end of #altmetrics as we know it: #Twitter ends free API access.
Countless hours of development work and creativity with data, apps, visualizations, conference walls, and a lot more: Gone.

Now, if the Fediverse would be a tiny bit more open to #federatedsearch approaches, this would be a historical opportunity to direct the attention of all these developers, artists etc to Mastodon & Co.

ResearchHub is holding a "reputation hackathon" from February 3-19 to "design a better reputation algorithm for academic research." Sounds interesting, but I'm also not really clear who is involved with ResearchHub -- their about pages don't tell me anything useful. Anyone know anything about these folks?
EDIT: link removed, sounds like crypto-bs
