  2. The third job of #copaganda is to convince the public to spend more money on the punishment bureaucracy by framing #police, prosecutors, probation, parole, and prisons as effective solutions to interpersonal harm. Copaganda links safety to the things the punishment bureaucracy does, while downplaying the connection between safety and the material, structural conditions of people's lives.

  3. Over the years, numerous local officials have told me they cannot support reducing police budgets because they are terrified of retaliation by police, including of cops raiding their homes or stopping and harassing their loved ones. Such intimidation is a pervasive fact of daily life for local progressive politicians--and even of numerous judges who have confided in me about their fear of retaliation against their families by police.

  4. “Abolition, as a tradition, a philosophy, and a theory of change, moves away from a myopic focus on the prison toward a more expansive vision of the social, political, and economic processes that defined the context within which imprisonment came to be viewed as the legitimate hand of justice. As a “practical organizing tool and long-term goal”, abolition is a political vision with the goal of eliminating imprisonment, policing, and surveillance and creating lasting alternatives to punishment and imprisonment. As illustrated by the history of the prison and the police, reforms sold as “progressive” all too often function to mask expanding mandates, logics, and budget lines. Abolitionist movements require struggles about strategy and vision: what, for example are the “non-reformist reforms” (to use a phrase coined by Marxist theorist Andre Gorz and applied by Thomas Mathiesen in his Politics of Abolition) that make sustainable and material differences in the lives of people living under the control of oppressive systems?”

    So amazing and powerful!

Spontaneously, I had to think of what Immanuel Kant, who was considered so rational, had written.

"Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe, the more often and the more persistently I think about them: the starry sky above me and the moral law within me." I connect both with the awareness of my existence. "The first begins from the place I occupy in the outer world of the senses, and extends the connection in which I stand into the immeasurably great with worlds above worlds and systems of systems, and furthermore into boundless times of their periodic movement, their beginning and continuation. The second begins with my invisible self, my personality, and presents me in a world that has true infinity, but is perceptible only to the mind, and with which (but thereby also simultaneously with all those visible worlds) I recognize myself not as there in a merely accidental, but in a general and necessary connection. The former sight of an innumerable multitude of worlds destroys, as it were, my importance as an animal creature, which must return the matter from which it was made to the planet (a mere point in space) after it has been endowed with vitality for a short time (one does not know how). The second, on the other hand, raises my value as an intelligence infinitely through my personality, in which the moral law gives me a life independent of animality and even of the whole world of the senses.

  6. I just got into an argument with a shopping centre security guard because he was trying to kick a houseless person out of the shopping centre. This person seemed semi-conscious and wasn't responding to his demands to leave, so the security guard kept saying he was going to call the cops.

I asked if he'd thought of calling an ambulance, because it seemed like a medical emergency to me (me, who was a nurse for a long fucking time..), and the security guard just said that it was "obviously drugs".

Turns out when the paramedics got there the guy had a blood sugar of 1.4mmol/L (which is like 25mg/dl for the US folks).

The security guard was all like "well how was I supposed to know??"

I mean, someone who is houseless having a medical crisis from a chronic condition that needs access to specialist management and regular food?? I'm fucking shocked. Who would ever have guessed?! 🙄

  11. Something is going on at Bathurst jail. There's a helicopter with paramedics, a dead person in a mortuary bag, and a bunch of cops standing around on the front lawns.

I hope all the people in the jail are ok and safe.

Morning folks. This is a hard one. I am sharing the go fund me for the family of Tylor Maxie (Coore), the Afro Indigenous man shot by toronto police on Tuesday.

Tylor suffers with paranoid schizophrenia and was having an episode at the time. Police took it upon themselves to shoot him as their only means of subduing Tylor and deescalating the situation leading to him near death in ICU after multiple surgeries.

Needless to say this is a heartbreaking and close to home reminder that police violence is at the root of the settler colonial project here, rife with racism and ableism. Only a day after Sonya Massey, who also suffered from schizophrenia was shot and killed by police.

  15. "Between 1 January 2013 and 30 June this year, sniffer dogs were deployed in NSW 20,477 times. There were 94,535 general and strip-searches prompted by the dogs but 70,913 or nearly 75% of these searches yielded no illicit drugs. The force maintains the dogs are “very effective”."

Add to that the fact that we overwhelmingly see these searches targeted towards Indigenous people, and that NSW Police has a history of using strip searches against young girls without a guardian present - it's predatory.

  16. Books in prison are weapons against fascism, illiteracy, self-hatred, and lack of self esteem. Books unite us all to end censorship. Censorship is just social control by those in power. It does not protect anything for the people. It just keeps us more ignorant and able to be manipulated. Prison officials everywhere know this is true. It may seem this is a minor or secondary thing, but to keep you from such “radical” thoughts as Anarchism, Socialism, Feminism, Queer liberation, as well as knowledge of your rights and how to asset them against authority figures, is one of the few ways to fight back against their abuse. Knowledge is power!
