  1. UPDATE! The motherfuckers have cancelled. Most excellent.
    📢 📣 📢 📣 📢

    Yo! #Toronto!

There's another #NaziRally this Sunday, on Yonge Street, no less.

Do you know the little parkette between Gerrard and Carlton? The one with the archway? That's the one.

    Sunday. 2 pm.
White Lives Matter, Paul Fromm, Gus Stefanis.

This is what happens when you let the cops help them march through the streets: they get emboldened.

I'm going to need you to get off your ass and show up this time.

  2. And airport duty again.
Been a while since I've been on this duty, and fortunately, it's relatively rare.

Last night cops hassled the flotilla returnee. Tonight, who knows.

  3. 2/🧵

It was a long day yesterday.
(It's going to be another long day today, but at least I get some gardening time in before the shit show.)

Yesterday's event was a lovely part of the AAPI Heritage Month festivities, that had drumming and lion dancing, plus I got a knot in my upper back lessened.

But also the cops briefly turned up, justifying our presence.

It is amazing to me that Toronto Police Service has yet to figure out that we are asked to be present at an ever-widening array of events, precisely because someone is anticipating police malfeasance.

A certain someone has been saying that our refusal to pretend to be neutral means that we shouldn't be calling ourselves "legal observers", because there is an air of neutrality in the name.

I say that is an illusion.
Legal observers are requested specifically to watch and document POLICE malfeasance. Even the NLG with its policy of not chanting or participating in protests, are not there to document what the protestors do.

We at Orange Hats take the policy that as long as the police are not "malfeasing", we are free to do anything up to, but not including, civil disobedience while wearing the hat. (We can always take the hat off.)

Calling cops "fascist motherfuckers" is not civil disobedience. I'm sure they would love to arrest me for that, yet it's not illegal. Sucks being them.

Anyway, as anticipated, a clusterfuck of cops turned up to intimidate attendees at the Asian Massage Festival yesterday, an event put on by a community heavily over-policed, and so we had been asked to be present.

I (being me) had a "Tell Cersei" moment and walked down the stairs to a point where they could see me to snap a photo, which is when they noticed four other Orange Hats peering over the railing collecting their badge numbers. 😁

On their way out the door (having been invited to get the fuck out by facilities management) one of our favourites rambled some nonsense about OH being "anti-cop disruptors" and that people shouldn't want to be associated with us.

In that we *disrupted* their plans to force their way in and threaten people, I guess maybe we are. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Somehow, I don't think cops would like it better if we were called Police Malfeasance Observers and Documenters + Legal Support, which is technically what we are.

Also they should stop getting their ✌🏾"intel"✌🏾 from Caryma, and I would probably stop mockingly asking them if they "realize that intel is short for intelligence," and they should probably stop looking to a person who is fatally allergic to the concept for theirs.

  4. It's a hell of a thing that people need to request legal observers for a May Day picnic.

The cops are busy defending Patriots Square 🚻.

  5. Goodness!
They correctly reported them as belonging to the counter-protestor group.

During one incident, it’s alleged a man participating in the counter-demonstration confronted a participant in the Al-Quds demonstration who was holding a stick with an Islamic Republic of Iran flag attached.

Police say the accused began swinging his arms and fists at the victim, breaking the stick and causing pieces of it to strike the victim in the head.

Police allege that in a second incident, another man participating in the counter-demonstration followed a participant who was wearing an Islamic Republic of Iran flag on their back.

Investigators say the accused “spat on the victim and ripped the flag off their back” before returning to the crowd.

Given how many cops were there yesterday, I think we can adequately close the book on whether cops prevent anything from happening.

  6. Submissions happening for the injunction against today's Jerusalem/Al Quds Day rally.

It's also the day before the International Day Against Police Brutality.

I'm kind of hoping TPS isn't going to give us a bunch more examples for our socials and actual media.

    We already have enough.

  7. Great turnout for the OSAP cuts protest.

Popped in for a bit to check in (they'll be fine; there's lots of media, lots of students).

Now on my way to participate in a panel on policing, mental health, and students.

  8. A really solid article about the state of Toronto protest policing.

It leverages the injury stats that we collect as Orange Hats, but it goes well beyond that.

Policing institutions are highly organized, funded, and ideologically mobilized militant forces that serve the capitalist-colonial global paradigm — nothing they do is (or can be) done in an apolitical vacuum. For that reason, the surrounding social-political context helps us assess the material underpinnings of why the state behaves violently toward certain groups, but not others, even if they’re all racialized.

The above Orange Hats report came just a few days before something seemingly unrelated happened. The official TPS Instagram account posted a now-viral reel in support of the United States-Israeli-backed Pahlavi regime change movement on February 2nd, and noted how there were “zero incidents” at a protest the day before.

The full caption of the Toronto Police reel that has amassed 4.3 million views and 200,000+ likes reads as such:

    150,000 demonstrators and
    zero incidents.

    Thanks to the meticulous
    planning, effective on‑the‑ground
    work, and professionalism of
    our members and specialized
    units [emphasis added],
    yesterday’s event in the heart
of our city remained safe and
    peaceful.

When the police say there was ‘no incident’, all that usually means is no one was arrested. In a reality where fascists and neo-Nazis are protected to roam freely, while pro-Palestinian and Indigenous people get arrested after state thugs drive an unmarked car or ride horses into them, what exactly does Toronto Police claim ‘no incidents’ actually reveal?

  9. Going through my footage from yesterday and discovering that my resolution to swear *slightly less* at cops is not going well.

Please enjoy the dulcet tones of "Gigi dealing with a wrongful arrest*."

(I should look for footage from a decade ago to show the difference in what I was like.)

    * ETA: They released him about 10 minutes later. It was just more strategic incapacitation.
