Back to the protests.¹

Monday:

Yeah so remember how I started this whole thing because I noticed I hadn't put my earrings back in? Well this was a protest where the legal support team prepared by removing anything that could get grabbed (like dangly earrings) pinning our hair up, and packing indirect vented goggles in case of tear gas.

None of which ended up being needed.

The action started at Nathan Phillips Square, where a couple thousand people gathered and spent an hour or so with undercover cops wandering in and out and through the crowd. But at least we finally seem to have got people to stop publicly cop-jacketing people randomly.

Most people are NOT GOOD AT IT. They tend to assume that anybody who is a little different or a little weird is a cop, when it could just be somebody neurodivergent or otherwise different.

➡️ Pro Tip: Everyone should always just assume there are cops in the crowd and act accordingly. Kudos to cops for finally figuring out that footwear is part of the disguise, I guess.

Anyway, then we marched over to the Art Gallery, where the 💰💰fat cats💰💰 were auctioning off the future, only to find that the cops had installed the barricades backwards, and I spent the ENTIRE EVENING waiting for them to get knocked over.

At one point, I was standing on the triangle part, and somebody started to push it, and I thought, "Oooo, here we go," but perhaps my weight led them to think they were sturdier than they were, or maybe they didn't realize what they were dealing with, so they stopped.

In response to the momentary shaking, TPS formed a Snatch Squad behind the line², and I thought, "Oh shit now it's going to pop off," but it never did.
Which is good.

There were only two arrests that night, which, considering the many ways that could have shaken out, was a miracle.³

As always, it was a spectacularly wasteful display. Cops from: TPS, OPP, RCMP, Peel Regional, York, Hamilton, and Durham. Every goddamned toy every one of the units has, too. Mounted units. Drones. Facial rec.
They got it, it was there.

² that's not what you're looking at in the photo, that photo is just a different point in the evening when TPS was preparing to relieve OPP of backward barricade duty.

³ this is how you know Orange Hats is not organizing the protests or dictating tactics. We ALL knew of those were backwards the minute we arrived. Our job is to be able to predict the risks of police violence, and that was right at the top of the list.
