  1. Okay! Who wants to bet cops are involved?
How MANY cops do you want to bet are involved?

    ❝
There are no outstanding suspects but the investigation is continuing, Matthews said.

While the suspects have not been tied to any organized gang, Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw said the risk they posed to the community and responding officers is “concerning.”

His anger was not out of place at the townhall. It did not matter, in this room—the first public event after Bradford’s campaign launch—that break-ins in the city had in fact plummeted during the pandemic and have never returned to their pre-2020 levels. Nor did it matter that, after rising briefly between 2022 and 2023, they’ve gone down during Olivia Chow’s time as mayor. What mattered to Bradford was how you felt.

  3. 2/🧵

    Back to the protests.¹

    Monday:
    ✊🏿 ✊🏾 ✊🏽 ✊🏼 ✊🏻
6 PM Crash Carney's CEO Summit
    ✊🏻 ✊🏼 ✊🏽 ✊🏾 ✊🏿

Yeah so remember how I started this whole thing because I noticed I hadn't put my earrings back in? Well this was a protest where the legal support team prepared by removing anything that could get grabbed (like dangly earrings) pinning our hair up, and packing indirect vented goggles in case of tear gas.

None of which ended up being needed.

The action started at Nathan Phillips Square, where a couple thousand people gathered and spent an hour or so with undercover cops wandering in and out and through the crowd. But at least we finally seem to have got people to stop publicly cop-jacketing people randomly.

Most people are NOT GOOD AT IT. They tend to assume that anybody who is a little different or a little weird is a cop, when it could just be somebody neurodivergent or otherwise different.

➡️ Pro Tip: Everyone should always just assume there are cops in the crowd and act accordingly. Kudos to cops for finally figuring out that footwear is part of the disguise, I guess.

Anyway, then we marched over to the Art Gallery, where the 💰💰fat cats💰💰 were auctioning off the future, only to find that the cops had installed the barricades backwards, and I spent the ENTIRE EVENING waiting for them to get knocked over.

At one point, I was standing on the triangle part, and somebody started to push it, and I thought, "Oooo, here we go," but perhaps my weight led them to think they were sturdier than they were, or maybe they didn't realize what they were dealing with, so they stopped.

In response to the momentary shaking, TPS formed a Snatch Squad behind the line², and I thought, "Oh shit now it's going to pop off," but it never did.
    Which is good.

There were only two arrests that night, which, considering the many ways that could have shaken out, was a miracle.³

As always, it was a spectacularly wasteful display. Cops from: TPS, OPP, RCMP, Peel Regional, York, Hamilton, and Durham. Every goddamned toy every one of the units has, too. Mounted units. Drones. Facial rec.
They got it, it was there.

    _____

¹ Yeah we're just going to let that other thread fork shrivel and die. Mind: It's good when late nights are because you're having fun and not because you're sitting outside of a police station waiting for people to be released.

² that's not what you're looking at in the photo, that photo is just a different point in the evening when TPS was preparing to relieve OPP of backward barricade duty.

³ this is how you know Orange Hats is not organizing the protests or dictating tactics. We ALL knew of those were backwards the minute we arrived. Our job is to be able to predict the risks of police violence, and that was right at the top of the list.

  4. I just realized that I did not put my earrings back in after Monday's protest.

Anyhoo, waiting for the Antifa Awards¹, so seems like an opportunity to recap the weekend's (and Monday's) protests.

    A 🧵.

    Saturday:

    ✊🏻 ✊🏼 ✊🏽 ✊🏾 ✊🏿
    12 PM Justice for Kaleym
    TPS HQ
    ✊🏿 ✊🏾 ✊🏽 ✊🏼 ✊🏻

On August 6, 2026, plainclothes 🐖🐖 shot Kaleym Davy, a 19 year old Black youth, IN THE HEAD, then issued a media release stating he was ina stolen vehicle.

    He was not².
Good luck finding a single media article with the connection, though.

At this point in my life, I always assume that the more charges flying around, the more the cops know they're in the wrong. And boy, have a LOT of charges been laid³.

A protest was held outside TPS HQ, or rather just west of TPS HQ, because cops are not good with criticism, so they BLOCKED THE SIDEWALK making it impossible for anyone to use the north side of the street.

A march followed (more on this in a minute).

Yes, there were fash, but this is not about them, so fuck them.

    ✊🏿 ✊🏾 ✊🏽 ✊🏼 ✊🏻
    1 PM Disability Pride
    Allan Gardens
    ✊🏻 ✊🏼 ✊🏽 ✊🏾 ✊🏿

At about 2:30 PM I wandered over to Allan Gardens to LO at the TDP march, as they were prepping to take the road. The group was 3 times the size of the protest at TPS HQ, but that one was Black people, soooooo it had way more cops, and the militarized ones, at that.

(I was told that the fash who were harassing the other march had been and gone from this one already.)

So the march took the street and went along Carlton to Yonge, and South on Yonge, when I started getting messages from the first LO team that the cops were starting to hassle their group at Sankofa Square... just as we were reaching Gould.

For non-Toronto peeps, that's a long block away.

So the two groups met up and shut down the intersection for a good while, while speeches were given, solidarity was declared and demonstrated, and then the two protests became one and marched to Grange Park, much to TPS' displeasure.

Guest is here now, so part two will be later.

    ________

¹ That's a joke. Sort of. We're having dinner with an out of town guest, so no potluck tonight.

  5. Fun reminder that the RCMP was built for ethnic cleansing and genocide.

    ❝
The RCMP can apply the lessons it learned at an Israeli military seminar last year to “Canadian law enforcement contexts,” according to a briefing document written by Canada’s defence attaché in Israel.

The international seminar focused on the “lessons learned” from Israel’s war on Gaza, which is almost universally recognized as a genocidal campaign among leading human rights organizations and by a United Nations independent commission.

The document, obtained by The Maple via an access to information request, states that four RCMP officers who attended the seminar in Tel Aviv last November learned “lessons on intelligence fusion, rapid response, and civilian protection [that] can be adapted to Canadian law enforcement contexts.”

  6. Man.
Cops get huffy when you ask them if they're gonna give you a carding receipt when they talk to you unsolicitedly.

Wait until I start asking them if they want some of my hair for their trophy collection. 😇

    montrealgazette.com/news/montr

    ❝
The officers under scrutiny are said to be predominantly young male constables with three to four years of experience.

Investigators are examining claims that Black people and individuals of Arab origin were disproportionately targeted in the district’s diverse neighbourhoods. Some officers are alleged to have made racist remarks, according to witness testimony gathered during the probe.

Members of the team also allegedly collected pieces of locs (also called dreadlocks) — cut from apprehended men — and kept the hair as trophies, according to reports by La Presse and Radio-Canada.

Dagher declined to confirm or deny the latter allegation Friday night, but added that the hair cutting is part of the investigation and therefore could not be commented on at this time.

“The SPVM reiterates that racism, discrimination or any other unacceptable behaviour is not tolerated within the organization,” Dagher said.

  7. Last night I was made to remove the line about cops brainstorming additional charges to make themselves look better about fucking up (ALL charges were dropped eventually) from a report, right about the time cops were brainstorming charges for a 12 yr old they shot at, multiple times judging by the plethora of tiny cones marking the shell casings.

    1. Thank fucking DOG cops are shit shots or there might be three dead 12-year-olds right now.

    2. The practice of standing in FRONT of a vehicle while firing at it is the MOST INANE FUCKING THING ever to have originated in watching too much television.

    3. Cops ABSOLUTELY DO OVERCHARGE AND JUST MAKE SHIT UP when they know they're in the wrong, in order to deflect and make it look like they've done something impressive. We really have to look at cases where charges get dropped or reduced through that lens, ALWAYS.

    4. Since there really is no such thing as accountability for police, I have developed a petty and omnipresent urge to see them do more paperwork and be embarrassed by the actual wrong that they do.

I'm going to start calling for public inquiries into everything. I don't actually think the fucking inquiries are going to do a fucking thing except make paperwork and embarrass them.

Much like I don't think the SIU investigations do anything except make paperwork and embarrass them, but it is the tool I have and it is the tool I'm going to use.

    4. I'm endlessly impressed by the size of my information and rumour network at this point. You'll see why shortly.

Network linked to GFL attacks: sources
According to a source close to the investigation into the gun-for-hire network, Bennett is also believed to be connected to a string of recent attacks on GFL, the waste-management firm that controls much of Toronto’s garbage and recycling collection. The company has been at the centre of a violent and confusing saga for more than two years, with a handful of shootings targeting the homes of top executives, as well as offices and other facilities. Most recently, GFL was targeted in roughly a half a dozen attacks over the course of a few weeks in March.

The source, whom the Star agreed not to name because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the case, said police believe the gun-for-hire network was responsible for the GFL attacks, assigning a team of teenagers to carry out shootings.

    {{ snip }}

The probe’s dragnet has spanned a number of cases related to ongoing violence in the GTA’s long-fraught towing industry, said a government official with knowledge of a wider investigation into GTA guns-for-hire, whom the Star agreed not to name because they are not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Over recent years, the GTA saw a significant spike in violence related to the towing industry, including shootings, extortions, arson and at least two homicides. In 2024, Toronto police linked 63 firearm discharges to the sector, accounting for almost 13 per cent of shootings in the city that year. Police tell the Star that figure dropped slightly in 2025, to just under seven per cent.

Sukhram, himself a drug squad officer, pleaded guilty in June to possession of cocaine and methamphetamine, breach of trust and obstructing justice.

According to two separate agreed statements of facts, Sukhram took part in carrying out a search warrant at the apartment of an alleged drug dealer on Jarvis Street in Toronto on July 2, 2024.

Sukhram and six other officers were involved in the operation. The alleged dealer had been arrested earlier that day after selling drugs to police.

Various quantities of GHB, ecstasy, crystal meth, cocaine, methamphetamine tablets, Xanax, Adderall Pink and ketamine were seized from a safe in the living room.

The officers returned to the police's drug squad building and worked overtime to process the drugs. Sukhram left at about 1:25 a.m. in plainclothes with a black backpack.

  12. 2/🧵

It was a long day yesterday.
(It's going to be another long day today, but at least I get some gardening time in before the shit show.)

Yesterday's event was a lovely part of the AAPI Heritage Month festivities, that had drumming and lion dancing, plus I got a knot in my upper back lessened.

But also the cops briefly turned up, justifying our presence.

It is amazing to me that Toronto Police Service has yet to figure out that we are asked to be present at an ever-widening array of events, precisely because someone is anticipating police malfeasance.

A certain someone has been saying that our refusal to pretend to be neutral means that we shouldn't be calling ourselves "legal observers", because there is an air of neutrality in the name.

I say that is an illusion.
Legal observers are requested specifically to watch and document POLICE malfeasance. Even the NLG with its policy of not chanting or participating in protests, are not there to document what the protestors do.

We at Orange Hats take the policy that as long as the police are not "malfeasing", we are free to do anything up to, but not including, civil disobedience while wearing the hat. (We can always take the hat off.)

Calling cops "fascist motherfuckers" is not civil disobedience. I'm sure they would love to arrest me for that, yet it's not illegal. Sucks being them.

Anyway, as anticipated, a clusterfuck of cops turned up to intimidate attendees at the Asian Massage Festival yesterday, an event put on by a community heavily over-policed, and so we had been asked to be present.

I (being me) had a "Tell Cersei" moment and walked down the stairs to a point where they could see me to snap a photo, which is when they noticed four other Orange Hats peering over the railing collecting their badge numbers. 😁

On their way out the door (having been invited to get the fuck out by facilities management) one of our favourites rambled some nonsense about OH being "anti-cop disruptors" and that people shouldn't want to be associated with us.

In that we *disrupted* their plans to force their way in and threaten people, I guess maybe we are. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Somehow, I don't think cops would like it better if we were called Police Malfeasance Observers and Documenters + Legal Support, which is technically what we are.

Also they should stop getting their ✌🏾"intel"✌🏾 from Caryma, and I would probably stop mockingly asking them if they "realize that intel is short for intelligence," and they should probably stop looking to a person who is fatally allergic to the concept for theirs.

  13. Currently watching 4 cops sit in their cars, bored, playing with their lights, visiting each other's cars, but at least they are avoiding doing actual work (*cough*harassing other marginalized people*cough*) because about 30 people are talking to passers-by.

The demand for the man’s location data was included in a request DHS issued to Google called a customs summons, which is supposed to be used to investigate issues related to importing goods and collecting customs duties.

“It says right in the statute, it’s for records and testimony about the correctness of an entry, the liability of a person for duties, taxes, and fees, you know, compliance with basic customs laws,” says Chris Duncan, a former assistant chief counsel for US Customs and Border Protection who now works as a private-practice attorney representing importers and exporters. “And that's all it was ever envisioned to be used for.”

  16. The cackle I let out at this nonsense!
I wonder if they are throwing as many resources at their protests as TPS is.

We regularly have more police than protestors, sometimes when there's a counter-protest, more police than both the protestors AND the counter-protestors.
