It was a long day yesterday.
(It's going to be another long day today, but at least I get some gardening time in before the shit show.)Yesterday's event was a lovely part of the AAPI Heritage Month festivities, that had drumming and lion dancing, plus I got a knot in my upper back lessened.
But also the cops briefly turned up, justifying our presence.
It is amazing to me that Toronto Police Service has yet to figure out that we are asked to be present at an ever-widening array of events, precisely because someone is anticipating police malfeasance.
A certain someone has been saying that our refusal to pretend to be neutral means that we shouldn't be calling ourselves "legal observers", because there is an air of neutrality in the name.
I say that is an illusion.
Legal observers are requested specifically to watch and document POLICE malfeasance. Even the NLG with its policy of not chanting or participating in protests, are not there to document what the protestors do.We at Orange Hats take the policy that as long as the police are not "malfeasing", we are free to do anything up to, but not including, civil disobedience while wearing the hat. (We can always take the hat off.)
Calling cops "fascist motherfuckers" is not civil disobedience. I'm sure they would love to arrest me for that, yet it's not illegal. Sucks being them.
Anyway, as anticipated, a clusterfuck of cops turned up to intimidate attendees at the Asian Massage Festival yesterday, an event put on by a community heavily over-policed, and so we had been asked to be present.
I (being me) had a "Tell Cersei" moment and walked down the stairs to a point where they could see me to snap a photo, which is when they noticed four other Orange Hats peering over the railing collecting their badge numbers. 😁
On their way out the door (having been invited to get the fuck out by facilities management) one of our favourites rambled some nonsense about OH being "anti-cop disruptors" and that people shouldn't want to be associated with us.
In that we *disrupted* their plans to force their way in and threaten people, I guess maybe we are. 🤷🏾♀️
Somehow, I don't think cops would like it better if we were called Police Malfeasance Observers and Documenters + Legal Support, which is technically what we are.
Also they should stop getting their ✌🏾"intel"✌🏾 from Caryma, and I would probably stop mockingly asking them if they "realize that intel is short for intelligence," and they should probably stop looking to a person who is fatally allergic to the concept for theirs.

The important part to note, is that the cops seem to have a new and consistent strategy of letting instigators wander through protests now, hoping that they will instigate something that merits an arrest, thus letting them claim to have done something that justifies the MASSIVE EXPENDITURE that they've been indulging in over the past couple of years.
It is my impression that Adam Lee Wasserman has managed to get into an altercation every single day this week, so he is fairly reliable for that.

Spending the afternoon with BAYAN and community members who are rallying for the 19 people killed in a Philippine military operation in Toboso, Negros Occidental on April 19-20.
Victims included civilians, student leaders like Alyssa Alano, community journalist RJ Ledesma, human rights advocates, and two Filipino-Americans.
Protestors are demanding an end to the killings, accountability for the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and justice for those slain while advocating for farmers and communities.

During one incident, it’s alleged a man participating in the counter-demonstration confronted a participant in the Al-Quds demonstration who was holding a stick with an Islamic Republic of Iran flag attached.Police say the accused began swinging his arms and fists at the victim, breaking the stick and causing pieces of it to strike the victim in the head.

Please enjoy the dulcet tones of "Gigi dealing with a wrongful arrest*."
(I should look for footage from a decade ago to show the difference in what I was like.)
* ETA: They released him about 10 minutes later. It was just more strategic incapacitation.

I fail to see why people protecting Nazis should have an OUNCE of morale.
Cops were very upset to learn that people were being told that TPS was backing up Nazis, with one cop repeatedly telling people that they weren't obligated to take the flyers 😁
(Wait until next month.)It's not quite as pleasurable as the "I don't think we deserve to be berated" whining from last round of this shitshow, but the idea that they were not being seen as ✌🏾"the good guys"✌🏾 really REALLY bothered them.
That probably has more to do with the recent MULTIPLE arrests of dirty cops and the beating they're taking in the press, but holy shit they were a lot less aggressive after their false arrest of a legal observer at the very beginning and a reminder of the SIU investigation and how they acquired it.

Cops were very upset to learn that people were being told that TPS was backing up Nazis, with one cop repeatedly telling people that they weren't obligated to take the flyers 😁
(Wait until next month.)It's not quite as pleasurable as the "I don't think we deserve to be berated" whining from last round of this shitshow, but the idea that they were not being seen as ✌🏾"the good guys"✌🏾 really REALLY bothered them.
That probably has more to do with the recent MULTIPLE arrests of dirty cops and the beating they're taking in the press, but holy shit they were a lot less aggressive after their false arrest of a legal observer at the very beginning and a reminder of the SIU investigation and how they acquired it.

Oh! And Bernardo taking one of the flyers which nearly killed me with laughter, which he TOPPED by trying to convince us that the arrest of Vorudi last weekend means they're doing a good job.
