I'm thinking about creating my child accounts on #loops and/or #peerTube instead of doing that on YouTube or TikTok - of course. For creating content as well.
But what about child protection?
As far as I can see, there is none built-in at all, right!? Is this a thing even in the #fediverse? This important topic is getting more and more attention in the recent past - which is good - but what are you doing or planning about it? Is there something I missed?Sincerely

There are multiple angles to this:
Yes, social media is bad (for kids). So, go against the US Surveillance Tech social media mega conglomerates to get it right! Bust them in court to eternity for ludicrous sums of $$$ until they stop abusing their position.
Age gates are bad. They massively torpedo people's privacy. It needs to be a social **right** to get certain information anonymously (e.g. mental health, gender issues, and all kinds of other things).
Who's behind this? Predominantly the decision to adopt age gates has been driven and fuelled by Meta and other social media giants. Estimates are that Meta has put approx. US$ 2 billion into this in lobbying and funding of 'interest groups' that are supposedly pro-family and for child protection. Meta has the most to gain (exclusion of smaller competition that can't afford it, plus *verified* identity data of users for better targeting ads and campaigns).

Sharing for awareness. The government is building the walls to the cage, and we should be upset.

Finland has issued stricter guidelines for children’s use of digital gadgets, including the call for a ban on the use of social media or smartphones for under-13s.
The new rules were published on Thursday.
“We’ve had an uncontrolled human experiment going on,” says an associate professor in adolescent medicine.

It’s entirely within the realm of possibility, that the large social media companies will actually lobby for the #agerestriction laws to become even more complex and broad.
Making complince with the law become prohibitively expensive would drown out competitors and alternatives like the #fediverse
