  1. Anna Boleyn (1920) is by far the most conventional of Ernst Lubitsch's early silent films and the most disappointing. It's a by-the-numbers historical tragic romance epic. Lubitsch was always at his best when he was being wild and crazy.

  2. WEST OF ZANZIBAR is a 1928 silent tropical melodrama spiced with horror. Directed by Tod Browning, stars Lon Chaney. Deep in the jungle a bitter cripple plots a terrible revenge. Outrageous, but the 1932 talkie remake KONGO is vastly superior.

  3. The Black Pirate is a 1926 Douglas Fairbanks swashbuckler shot in early Technicolor. With battles, pirates, a princess and romance. And sex (with the princess to be offered to the pirates as a sexual plaything) and violence. Lots of fun.

  8. The Temptress (1926), one of Greta Garbo's first major hits. She plays a vamp who may or may not be entirely wicked. Beautifully crafted unabashed melodrama with Garbo's subtlety and star quality already very evident. She is stunning and sexy.

  9. Flesh and the Devil is a 1926 MGM silent melodrama starring Greta Garbo and John Gilbert. A huge hit which made Garbo a star. Gloriously lurid, steamy, melodramatic and romantic and absolutely dripping with sex. Garbo sizzles. Great movie.

  10. The Spanish Dancer is a 1923 silent romantic melodrama. A beautiful fiery gypsy girl and a dissolute nobleman become embroiled in court intrigues in 17th century Spain. A great love story. See it for Pola Negri at the top of her game.

  11. Sumurun (1920), early Ernst Lubitsch Arabian Nights-style fantasy/adventure/romance with Pola Negri. At times it's tragedy, at other times cheerful bedroom farce, but always driven by sex. Early Lubitsch was astonishingly bold and experimental.

  12. The Wildcat (Die Bergkatze) is a 1921 Ernst Lubitsch silent comedy/romance. It's wild crazy, visually bizarre and flamboyant, and insanely romantic. Wild gal Rischka (Pola Negri), daughter of a bandit chief, falls for a womanising army officer.

  13. The Thief of Bagdad (1924), entirely a product of the genius of Douglas Fairbanks Sr, is one of the greatest Hollywood movies ever made. A visually stupendous tale of adventure, magic and romance. Entrancing, breathtakingly imaginative. Superb.

  14. Piccadilly, a stylish 1929 British silent melodrama. Pretty Chinese girl Shosho gets her chance as a dancer and becomes the toast of the town. Pure romantic melodrama, let down by the ending. Anna May Wong gives her best performance as Shosho.

  15. The 1929 version of The Letter might not be as good as the 1940 version and it doesn't have Bette Davis but it is pre-code so it's much more salacious and sexually honest and Jeanne Eagels' performance is outrageous. It's worth a look.

  16. Lady of the Night (1925), a 1925 silent film starring Norma Shearer. She plays two roles (inevitably a good girl and a bad girl). A good low-key subtle romantic drama. Worth seeing if you want to know why Norma Shearer was such a big deal.

  17. William Wyler's Hell’s Heroes (1929). Three outlaws in the desert find themselves saddled with a baby. Saving themselves will be hard enough. A visually impressive western. Not a bad movie but much too sentimental for my tastes.
