  1. Flesh and the Devil is a 1926 MGM silent melodrama starring Greta Garbo and John Gilbert. A huge hit which made Garbo a star. Gloriously lurid, steamy, melodramatic and romantic and absolutely dripping with sex. Garbo sizzles. Great movie.

  6. Mandalay (1934) belongs to a sub-genre I dearly love, the pre-code tropical melodrama. With Kay Francis as a high-class hooker and sexual adventuress. She wears fabulous slinky 30s dresses. She’s at the top of her game here. Great movie.

  8. The Damned Don’t Cry (1950), a delightfully overheated noir-tinged Joan Crawford melodrama. She becomes a fashion model and naturally winds up as a gangster's moll. A fine movie although Crawford was fifteen years too old for the part.

  10. Madonna of the Seven Moons is a 1945 British Gainsborough melodrama but melodrama is hardly an adequate word to describe this truly bizarre film. It's beyond mere melodrama. Over-the-top, outrageously excessive, a delight from start to finish.

  12. MADONNA OF THE SEVEN MOONS (’45): Another of the feverish Gainsborough melodramas, this one really taking the cake in the “twists no one could have possibly predicted” department. Without giving too much away: a staid woman lives quiet existence after a childhood trauma, but then her daughter comes to see her and the careful veneer deteriorates. I loved the feverish, potboiling atmosphere of the 2nd half. And beautifully photographed too. #melodramas #britishfilm
