Over the Christmas holidays I finished a large drawing that I had been working on since the summer, on and off, but then life took over and I didn't find time to publish it.
It is a scene from Joseph von Sternberg's 1932 movie "Shanghai Express", featuring Anna May Wong and Marlene Dietrich.

It is the most complex large drawing I have attempted so far.
As usual, it is the expressions on the faces of both characters that interested me. I wanted to show their watchfulness and apprehension.I used the rough watercolour paper I like (Fabriano Artistico, 300 g/m² cold pressed “not”), 56 cm x 76 cm. I set up the drawing in ordinary HB pencil and Tombow MONO 100 graphite lead pencils (2B, 4B and 5B). I used a Chinese ink stick and applied the ink using calligraphy brushes.

I did another study for a #portrait of the Chinese-American movie actress Anna May Wong. It's based on a scene from the 1932 movie Shanghai Express.
Pencil, Chinese ink wash and brush and some graphite aquarelle pencils on heavy watercolour paper, portrait A4 format.

I did a quick portrait of the Chinese-American movie actress Anna May Wong, from a publicity photo from the 1930s. Pencil, Chinese ink wash and brush on heavy coarse watercolour paper, portrait A4 format.
It's a study for a larger drawing I am planning, based on a different photograph. This is a way to familiarise myself with the face. I have already read a lot about her.
The likeness is not perfect but I think the face has come to life. -

Yes, that’s legendary Chinese-American actress Anna May Wong as Princess Tiger Lily. Obviously, she and most of the actors playing indigenous film in this weren’t actually indigenous but I felt that it’s still nice to see an early role of hers nonetheless.

The Thief of Bagdad (1924), entirely a product of the genius of Douglas Fairbanks Sr, is one of the greatest Hollywood movies ever made. A visually stupendous tale of adventure, magic and romance. Entrancing, breathtakingly imaginative. Superb.
