Absolutely lovely film, that surprisingly became one of my favorite films of last year. This science fiction romantic drama was a big hit in Indonesia, winning local awards and being submitted to the Academy, without luck. I finally got around to watching #Oppenheimer. Besides the #nonlinear narrative, my criticisms would be similar to Lauren's as well - incredible technical achievements in producing what appears to be period-authentic scenery, sets, and props, and fantastic visuals, but in service of a somewhat lame, too-Hollywood script.

#Nolan's going to get pegged as a one-trick pony, like #Shyamalan (if he hasn't already...) with the nonlinear #storytelling. You're right that it was totally unnecessary here; this story could have been told start-to-finish and not lost one iota of its message or power. Arguably the opposite.

In Memento, the "two narrative threads with one played backwards" thing was essential to the story. Here the temporal slice-and-dice is a needless distraction, a "Mommy, watch me!" affectation. It detracts from the story.

The cheap #melodrama is annoying too, but it's hard to get worked up about that as long as the "look at what a twisted web I can weave" attitude is there to complain about.

One Night at Susie’s is an OK 1930 pre-code crime/romantic melodrama. Very pre-code. The theatre world is depicted in all its sleazy reality. The plot has more holes than a hoodlum who’s just been ventilated by a machine gun.

The Painted Veil, a 1934 Greta Garbo romantic melodrama. Based on a Somerset Maugham story. The introduction of the Production Code earlier in 1934 results in characters whose behaviours make no sense but it looks good and Garbo is terrific.

Flesh and the Devil is a 1926 MGM silent melodrama starring Greta Garbo and John Gilbert. A huge hit which made Garbo a star. Gloriously lurid, steamy, melodramatic and romantic and absolutely dripping with sex. Garbo sizzles. Great movie.

Downstairs (1932) is an excellent hard-hitting pre-code melodrama with John Gilbert in top form as a deliciously slimy cad obsessed with women and money. Lots of pre-code sexual frankness here, and a very pre-code ending.

Mandalay (1934) belongs to a sub-genre I dearly love, the pre-code tropical melodrama. With Kay Francis as a high-class hooker and sexual adventuress. She wears fabulous slinky 30s dresses. She’s at the top of her game here. Great movie.

This Man Is Mine is a 1934 pre-code comedy/melodrama. Very pre-code, sophisticated, cynical. Irene Dunne's marriage is threatened by her husband's scheming ex. Dunne and Kay Johnson are terrific and wear amazing gowns. Delightful film.
