  1. I am now going to drink tea and read a short story by Somerset Maugham, for whom I think the designation "first rate second rate writer" was originally coined. Then I'll go to bed!

  2. Been listening to the well performed youtube audiobooks of #ShortStories that are collected in #WSomersetMaugham's #TheCasuarinaTree (1926).

Four stories listened to so far, not quite in order, and it looks clear that the violence of, and corrosive effects of, #Colonialism was common knowledge in Britain.

A novel #TheHouseOfDoors and #TheLetter are both based on a real event.

  3. The Painted Veil, a 1934 Greta Garbo romantic melodrama. Based on a Somerset Maugham story. The introduction of the Production Code earlier in 1934 results in characters whose behaviours make no sense but it looks good and Garbo is terrific.

  4. The 1929 version of The Letter might not be as good as the 1940 version and it doesn't have Bette Davis but it is pre-code so it's much more salacious and sexually honest and Jeanne Eagels' performance is outrageous. It's worth a look.

  5. Lewis Milestone’s tropical melodrama Rain (1932), based on a story by W. Somerset Maugham. The story of a power struggle between a prostitute (Joan Crawford) and a preacher man (Walter Huston). One of the essential pre-code movies.

  6. Joan Crawford in Rain (1932). Her career-best performance and Rain is one of the three or four best of all the pre-code movies. A battle of wills between a prostitute and a preacher (played by Walter Huston).

Based on a story by W. Somerset Maugham.

  7. Bette Davis gives her career best performance in William Wyler's steamy overheated noirish tropical melodrama The Letter (1940). Based on a story by Somerset Maugham. Great movie.
