Anna Boleyn (1920) is by far the most conventional of Ernst Lubitsch's early silent films and the most disappointing. It's a by-the-numbers historical tragic romance epic. Lubitsch was always at his best when he was being wild and crazy.

The Temptress (1926), one of Greta Garbo's first major hits. She plays a vamp who may or may not be entirely wicked. Beautifully crafted unabashed melodrama with Garbo's subtlety and star quality already very evident. She is stunning and sexy.

Flesh and the Devil is a 1926 MGM silent melodrama starring Greta Garbo and John Gilbert. A huge hit which made Garbo a star. Gloriously lurid, steamy, melodramatic and romantic and absolutely dripping with sex. Garbo sizzles. Great movie.

Sumurun (1920), early Ernst Lubitsch Arabian Nights-style fantasy/adventure/romance with Pola Negri. At times it's tragedy, at other times cheerful bedroom farce, but always driven by sex. Early Lubitsch was astonishingly bold and experimental.

The Thief of Bagdad (1924), entirely a product of the genius of Douglas Fairbanks Sr, is one of the greatest Hollywood movies ever made. A visually stupendous tale of adventure, magic and romance. Entrancing, breathtakingly imaginative. Superb.
