  1. @steadystatemcr
The article describes the weakening of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority's sustainability policies, we believe as a concession to developers.
We had no notice of the changes but with other community and campaigning groups were able to argue against them. We have to wait to see what the Inspectors will conclude but aren't optimistic.

Link in this post to Manchester Evening News coverage of the #DevolutionWhitePaper and Burnham's comments.
At least this will correct some of the incoherence of the present multiple arrangements but the move to shire unitaries is big mistake IMO.

  6. The more you look at Labour's #planning policy, the more stupid it is.
Post I wrote (with SSM collective members) on the new #NPPF.
It's an open letter to #Labour MPs in #GreaterManchester (to ignore), which includes at least 3 #cabinet ministers and some other front benchers.
Do share, especially, but not only, if you are their constituent.

  7. Labour will encourage more building.
But what's behind it? What are the problems with it, and what's the alternative?
My new piece unpicks the key issues.

  9. Oh dear.
I suppose we'll have to do a critical analysis.
The chief flaw is obvious: no growth on a finite planet.
But we need to critically analyse the methodology and indicate a degrowth alternative.
Weve done a lot on the latter before, of course.

  10. #ManchesterCityCouncil #planning committee meeting was a disgrace.
Councillors failed to represent the enormous local opposition to this monolithic scheme.
They only celebrated 49 affordable homes (pitiful against the actual need which won't be met by private sector developers.
There was no real discussion and though a campaigner was allowed to speak, her excellent points were ignored in the posturing.

Go-ahead for 260 homes at former #Chorlton shopping centre.

  12. A typically cogent piece from Richard Heinberg.
Good to see this emphasis on the #bioregion as the appropriate scale to think about the (post #collapse) future. We've always emphasised this too, see thread to follow.

  14. #Manchester's filthy air.
    A long way to go.

"All in all, the measures will get Greater Manchester’s air to 40.3 micrograms of nitrogen dioxide in one cubic metre of air.
"The UK legal limit is officially 40, but results under 40.4 are rounded down, making TfGM’s plan compliant.
"But the World Health Organisation’s recommended limit is just 10."

Matthew notes that the government’s assertion, that “The worsening affordability of homes is the best evidence that supply is failing to keep up with demand”, is “an assumption, exhibiting all the hallmarks of confirmational bias, and is not backed up by any evidence at all.” Or in other words, propaganda.
