The TikTok fiasco continues! In spite of the URGENT national security concerns posed, and as demanded by law, the whole TikTok thing is a giant stinking pile of poo.
The TikTok divestiture law as passed April 24, 2024, and was originally set to take effect on January 19, 2025. We are now 16 months the law being passed and 9 months past the take effect date - and still no real progress. We continue to get smoke and mirrors.
It is highly unlikely the current iteration of the "deal" with its highly opaque algorithmic "licensing" arrangement will genuinely address the national security risks. I've recently learned that #Invisalign is a company with close ties to Israel. Much to my shame I had already paid 100s of euros to get started down the road for their use for my daughter. I regret not checking it out sooner. There are alternatives, though I would have to have fought with the dentist to get them.
Just in case anyone else could do with that info.
I now give a quick search for every company I'm thinking of doing a significant spend with.

Lawmakers in a Massachusetts city have voted to pass a historic ordinance divesting from companies that contribute to human rights violations, including Israel’s ongoing destruction of Gaza.
The Medford City Council passed the Values-Aligned Local Investments Ordinance on Tuesday evening, making Massachusetts the third state — after Michigan and Maine — where a municipality has barred investments in companies that profit from a conflict many experts have now labeled a genocide.
“We are in a new era where taxpayers are not just concerned with the services they receive as part of a city and town, but also how city and town resources are impacting global issues,” Council President Zac Bears, the ordinance’s sponsor, said on Monday.

“Solidarity activities at the global level should be strategic and impactful. They should focus on disrupting all components of the supply chain that benefit the Israeli occupation in general and settler colonialism in particular. This means citizens around the world in different sectors of society can contribute to the struggle for Palestine as both producers and consumers by heeding the call to boycott and divest from Israel.
Direct actions from the working class are crucial. Workers can integrate the Palestinian cause into their demands for better working conditions. For instance, public strikes in solidarity with Palestine, such as those organised by rail workers in European countries, might pressure governments to reconsider their support for Israel.
Similarly, port workers could strike to disrupt shipping linked to Israel, pushing governments to reassess their positions. Employees in high-tech industries can play a critical role in supporting Palestinians by demanding their companies align products, services and partnerships with international law, refusing to support technologies complicit in the Israeli occupation or settler violence. my complaints to the #OpenUniversity sent on the 23/06/25 for which, besides 2 emails saying they'll reply within 10 days, i am still waiting to get a meaningful reply:
i am a student criminology and psychology at the #ou. i am hereby complaining about the fact that the ou spends student's tuition fees on contracts and so called partnerships with companies that are actively involved in the mass murder of fellow human beings for profit.
