When I heard about #TheStringer and the questioning of Ut’s credit for “Napalm Girl,” I assumed it would be sensationalist bs. Now that I’ve seen it, I see it’s not. It’s a compelling story with compelling evidence. I haven’t seen any kind of response from Ut, the AP’s report isn’t persuasive.

Five Recent Stereoviews
Is there a nerdier branch of photography than stereo photography? (Yes, almost certainly.) Our interest, as a family, goes back a year or so to when we were clearing out Linda’s dad’s room at the assisted living facility. (He’s not dead, he just needed to move to a different room.) In the back of his closet we found a metal case filed with stereo slides and a vintage Kodak viewer from the late 1950s. We brought it home and were immediately captivated by the immediacy of those Kodachrome slides featuring images of Linda’s family life from the late 1950s and early 1960s. For all of our technology, it’s hard to think of anything contemporary that’s as compelling.
It was only a matter of days before I’d bought the matching Kodak Stereo Camera. I still haven’t ventured into slide film with it yet, but I have now done both color negative and black and white. If you click on any of the following, you can get the discrete “light box” image. Try to “free view” them. It’s hard to explain, but if you just kind of stare through them, you can get the effect without a viewer. Or, if you prefer, you can click on the link below each image to download a printable version. The print should 7″ across and it will fit into a standard, circa 1900 stereo viewer.

Snowflakes
Sometimes we go to estate sales to see what we can find. Last year, I was in the basement of a home on the far West side, and I found a tall stack of thick three-ring binders. These were filled with cut, paper snowflakes pasted onto black construction paper. That whole basement, actually, was testament to a person self-medicating through craft. There were piles of materials and supplies on shelves lining the walls. I knew nothing about the two men who had lived in this home except what you could glean of their interests and taste. Estate sales are interesting that way. They liked Lena Horne and The Frugal Gourmet, they’d travelled in Italy… but what can that really tell you? These snowflakes say more.
I was tempted, of course, to buy one of the binders. They were a dollar, which would have been a bargain considering the work that went into 100s of snowflakes. But Linda was right to remind me that our house isn’t infinitely accommodating. So, I took some quick snapshots instead. It occurred to me to share them. I’m filing this post under sustainability because it’s about personal resources and resilience.

Door County, Wisconsin, October 2024
We have 6 acres of land up in Door County, which is the peninsula that sticks into Lake Michigan. It's always 10 degrees cooler there than in Green Bay, where we live. So we think of it as our future climate refuge. Someday we'll build a cottage there, or drag up some kind of prefab something. But it's gorgeous in fall.
