Si ustedes disfrutan de las historias que mezclan la ciencia ficción con el suspenso policiaco clásico, tienen que darle una oportunidad a esta joya oculta del cine de culto. La trama arranca de una forma muy intensa: un hombre se despierta solo en la tina de un hotel completamente oscuro, no recuerda absolutamente nada de su pasado y descubre que lo está persiguiendo la policía por una serie de crímenes brutales que supuestamente él cometió. Mientras trata de escapar y unir las pocas pistas que tiene para descubrir quién es de verdad, se da cuenta de que vive en una ciudad extraña donde nunca sale el sol y que está controlada por unos seres pálidos y misteriosos conocidos como los Ocultos, quienes tienen la capacidad de detener el tiempo a la medianoche para cambiar la estructura de las calles y alterar los recuerdos de todos los habitantes a su antojo.
Visualmente la película es un espectáculo impresionante que retoma todo el estilo oscuro del cine negro de los años 40. El director prefirió construir escenarios físicos enormes y usar trucos de iluminación reales en lugar de abusar de las pantallas verdes, logrando crear una atmósfera de pesadilla atrapada en el tiempo que se siente pesada y fría. El reparto es de primer nivel, contando con grandes actuaciones de Rufus Sewell como el confundido protagonista, Jennifer Connelly y Kiefer Sutherland, quien interpreta a un doctor bastante peculiar que colabora con los villanos. Es una obra magnífica que plantea preguntas muy interesantes sobre qué es lo que nos hace humanos, si somos simplemente la suma de nuestros recuerdos o si existe algo más profundo dentro de nosotros que define nuestra verdadera identidad. De hecho, esta producción sirvió de inspiración directa para otras grandes películas muy famosas que salieron después, por lo que verla hoy en día es descubrir el origen de muchas ideas modernas de la ciencia ficción.
