  2. “I prefer to please myself first of all…” at school

One of the highlights of August's reading was the book on Colette from the My Reading series, and it lingered in my mind long after I'd finished it. I've written about Colette many times on the Ramblings as she's been a favourite author for most of my serious reading life. I was very drawn to revisit some of her writing after finished the book on her, but felt undecided about which work to choose.

  8. "A lot of people are talking about plagiarism and academic integrity right now, who weren’t talking about it as much or in the same way as they were when for example Neil Gorsuch, who will soon decide if an insurrectionist fascist can appear on presidential ballots, was being considered for the Supreme Court."

  10. Okay, so let's remember something really difficult: two or more things can be true at the same time.

    1. #Plagiarism is bad. It is deception. It is usually theft. In some cases it's an actual crime. You can plagiarize yourself (e.g.., by lying about the originality of a document). It's bad. If you defend plagiarism, you're either ignorant or have values about dishonesty and theft that I will probably never agree with.

    2. Selective enforcement of rules is also a thing, and is also bad. It's a common way, historically, to target an individual or group for abuse or injustice.

I've seen arguments that #ClaudineGay has been the victim of #SelectiveEnforcement, because of her race/ethnicity and/or as part of a right-wing agenda against liberal ideology in higher ed. These arguments are very plausible.

I've also seen arguments that she lied for personal advancement. Having known a bunch of people in positions of power (including university administrators), this is also quite plausible.

Both can be true. One doesn't invalidate the other. They're not mutually exclusive.

These things have some implications, like:

If a person says Claudine Gay did something bad (assuming she's guilty of plagiarism; IDK) and should resign due to achieving her position through academic dishonesty, this does not necessarily mean that person is expressing racism.

If a person says Claudine Gay is the victim of a conservative witch hunt targeting liberals in ivy league administrations, this does not necessarily mean this person doesn't care about academic standards or honesty.

I know a lot of people want certainty, a solid take that wraps this whole situation up with no room for doubt. However, in this situation as in many others, no such take exists here. More than one thing is going on, so more than one thing can be true at the same time.

  11. "And we’re helping them get away with it: The Times’ doesn’t much care if liberals think the Times is easily manipulated by right-wing liars — they’d much prefer that to liberals recognizing that the Times purposefully helps peddle right-wing lies. The former merely leads to exasperation with the Times and frustration that right-wing propagandists are so effective; the latter would lead to cancelled subscriptions."

  12. "Christopher Rufo and Elise Stefanik understand that the New York Times1 wants to behave this way. They want to inflate academic jaywalking by Harvard’s president into a massive scandal worthy of weeks of wall-to-wall coverage. …

At some point, when the same news company seems to keep falling for transparent bullshit, we’re the suckers if we don’t conclude that they’re just doing what they want to do."

  13. “You can call me any time.” Maya winks at Claudine, almost hoping she’d glare at her again. “For a pokemon battle. Or anything else~”

“Like hell I’d call you for anything else!” Claudine growls, her striking red eyes almost piercing through Maya in their intensity. “My only wish is to defeat you!”

And that’s the beginning of a wonderful rivalry.
