  3. I was delighted to see the Toronto election results have returned progressive mayor Olivia Chow to office, with a largely progressive city council. The race between Chow and Bradford, which the media was describing as neck & neck, turned out to be not even close. Bradford even lost to Chow in his own ward.

I was worried because an unknown who also had the last name “Chow” was running in this election. As I predicted, his vote share is way out of proportion to the other unknown candidates. (By “unknown”, I mean candidates that the media pretends don’t exist). Unknown candidates generally each got under 1000 votes, with a few up over 3000. Brendan Chow got 8102 votes, of which I’m presuming the vast majority were intended for Olivia Chow.

I’m looking forward to seeing what this city council can do. I just hope the same voters turn out for the next Provincial election.

  4. I had a friend who lived a few doors down and went through the most horrendous divorce with a vicious ex and a baby daughter in the mix. I’d known him for years, went to uni with him and went to gigs and things together for years. He could be a bit odd with people, but he was ok with me. To help him with legal fees, we lent him some money. Never saw it again. He never mentioned it and became deeply resentful of me for some reason. I kept coming back to him, for some reason, before finally seeing sense and backing off to protect myself and my mental health. This went on for literally 20 years before he moved up to Yorkshire. No sign of that money, but it’s a massive weight off my mind that he’s not squatting a few doors down the road any more.

Anyway. When someone shows you who they really are, believe them.

  5. I’ve just updated my iPhone mini and iPad from iOS 18 to 27. The transparency is largely mitigated but the bouncy animations are still a problem. They make the UI feel slow, the constant shape changing makes it harder to follow the controls and movement happening all over the screen is distracting and confusing. Turning on reduce motion doesn’t hit the spot for me. The problem for me isn’t motion, it’s motion that is dislocated from interaction.

  6. I nipped into the office on Sunday, during Storm Boelo (IKR!), and came across some obstacles on, and off, the Fallowfield Loop. A raging tailwind on the way home, thankfully. #BikeTooter #BikeToot #cycling #FallowfieldLoop #TheLoop #StormBoelo

  7. I swear I'm not making this up. So now I have to use the FOSS KOReader software which, turns out, is garbage. So I'm probably going to undo all this.

    2+ hours wasted. AI FTW.

(Not AI's fault, to be clear. Mine. But my point stands: normal people are not suddenly going to become software developers.)

  9. I found out second-hand that the platform my old R&D team had been building was scrapped. The tooling meant to carry a hundred-odd engineers off a PHP monolith and onto Go services, gone. They kept the monolith.

It stung, and I'd love to say all of the sting was aimed at whoever made the call. The longer I chewed on it, the more it pointed back at me.

That team's work was scaffolding. It's in every progress photo of a building site and nobody looks at it once. It costs money every week it stays up, it isn't what anybody ordered, and it's the obvious thing to take down when the budget gets tight.

Their value only ever showed up in someone else's numbers. Turning "this will make the whole department faster" into a number the business already cared about was my job as chief architect, and I didn't do it. "It'll be obvious later" is more of a hope than a case.

Given my time again, I'd run a second stream: pick a few systems that are really hurting, measure them, rebuild them on the unfinished platform, measure again. One finished room you can walk a stakeholder into.

  12. I'm using Claude to build a custom wireless sync solution for my Kobo reader. Cool, yeah. And possible because I'm basically already a software developer. But if anyone thinks 'normal people' are going to start building their own apps or whatever, let me tell you: you are dreaming. No chance anyone else is going to sit through two hours of this. None.

  13. I think API is the last heavy lift to build. And then a small list of enhancements/changes. Not even sure how I want to do the API yet

  14. I'm in a work meeting with a German company.
Our project-lead just asked the German chap if a specific issue was "on his radar".

Bit insensitive given that the Germans didn't have radar in WW2 😂

  16. I really love writing Battle Couples.

I love the idea of not having to make yourself weaker to appease someone else's ego, of having someone who loves you the way you are.

  20. I would much rather see a 100 line function than ten ten line functions with a stack depth of five. In practice the latter also brings more total lines and some extra layers with them. I know I'm in a minority here, I just cannot understand why.

I do that juts fine by myself.

  23. I offer up this Yew tree at Tarrington church for #ThickTrunkTuesday and #TextureTuesday 😊

At a mere 4.64m girth, it's only considered a 'notable tree' on the Woodland Trust database, but I was struck by its trunk of rippling muscle texture.
