My children are playing an adventure game, they have a compass and are looking for places never explored before - don’t worry they tell me, there are lots of unexplored places as we are pretending to be in the ‘1990s’, on further questioning they think that we might have had black and white tvs then… delightful

Continues to be a poor year for our vegetable garden, did however manage to harvest some French beans and plums (though our plum tree doesn’t look very happy, might not survive the rest of the summer) #gardening #vegtables #fruit

Current #sidequest conundrum, I've got an old #weathersatellite receiver which I want to resurrect.
The options are:
1 put it in the loft, would allow it to be high but antenna would be under a slate roof
2 I put it in my garage, would then be accessible but lower to the ground, antenna might the possible to mount near my solar panels outsideI'm thinking garage is probably best...

It's hot in the UK, currently in the ritual of closing windows/blinds to limit how much hot gets in, unfortunately houses are well insulated so while it's cool for a short period of time eventually the heat gets trapped and stays put...
Don't remember having to do this a few years ago #climatecrisis #ClimateCrisisIsNow

Looking forward to the #solarpunkconference 2024 today, I think there are still tickets if people are interested - https://www.solarpunkconference.com
One of the delegates made a unofficial schedule which adjusts to your local timezone https://remmycat.GitHub.io/solarpunk24-schedule/
Perhaps we some of you on the conference discord. I’ll try and do some posts during the presentations when I see them

Has anyone got experience about aluminium can solar heaters? I've seen a few DIY videos before and was wondering if there was a role for keeping my garage room warm without using electricity.
Basically I've learnt that keeping things warm is really really hard, you need a lot of energy - more then I really considered.

I'm not sure why I do it but I'm working on a slightly crazy project and a small part of that involves installing @postmarketOS on a Samsung A5 2017 (a5y17lte) which I got off eBay for £7 as it had a shattered screen.
Cue a rabbit hole for the last 4 days where I have wrestled the pmbootstrap, solved a bug which has stopped many downstream devices working recently, and then learnt all about adb sideloading and #twrp and #lineageos and finally today I have an installation of #postmarketos running connected over usbnet.
I don't know why I do it to myself... Now to write it up as don't want to have to relearn that all again

#Solarpowered #hydroponics are now online! During the summer I have excess solar power from the @solaradmin setup so last year I decided to try and use the spare power for a bit of hydroponics. It was a reasonable success so this year I'm going to do it again.
I'm going to grow basil again using the #kratkymethod as it worked well and we made lovely pesto with it. Particular lessons I've learnt include that I've upgraded my pH meter to a half decent one and properly calibrated with the solutions. Also with the change in the solar setup to a 24v system I think I'll have more power so will be able to max the on time for the lights.
I also started the basil plants on a windowsill in rockwool and only did one seed per block and each germinated so no crowding. I've also installed the 10W water heater just to ensure it's reasonably warm.Let's see how it goes!

Dear Fediverse,
Do you have a podcast you would be happy having archived?
I've been working on a mad project combining #cyberdecks #homelab mini racks and #recycling old tech. I'm in the process of writing it all up so hopefully will publish soon.
It means I've got a portable low power pseudo-server cluster which would work well as an archive - I recently read that podcasts are at risk of disappearing and while #internetarchive does a wonderful job I thought it would be fun to have another archive.Let me know if you are interested! I only want to host podcasts if given permission

While I appreciate that ‘hoverboards’ do exist it still makes me laugh when I walk past the sign at the local train station that bans the use of #hoverboards

First things first when attached to my digital scope #saleae there are no obvious communication on the labelled pins.
Only a single pin changes state on boot, going high for 1.7s
Next I started to pull the pins high and low to see if any thing changes and it turns out that PB2 allows you to change from Celsius to Fahrenheit - this explains the button that is inside the case, you must press it and it pulls it high -
#EmbarrassingMoment - at the risk of being identified our train has taken an extra 90 minutes out of its 150min run and my child vomited on herself about 60mins ago, we have become 'that family' despite what was expert clean up operation - it's just never enough.
Now just desperate to get off this train and hide...

#SolarPump Update - making progress with rebuilding the #rainwater pump, I’ve had to replace the electronics (and managed to reduce the number of parts). I’ve also changed the enclosure and am using a wooden bird box (but will have to block off the opening as no space for birds - they’ve got lots of other boxes nearby).
I think the reason the last enclosure flooded was due to a pump connector leak so I’ve positioned the pump at the bottom and built a small shelf for the electronics.

It’s nice that the evenings are light enough so that when I get back from work I have time to do some watering. And now I don’t have to lug up the water due to my #solarpump that makes it even more pleasurable.
Now if the risk of frost could go way that would be great, thanks
